Twitter Mailbag: Flyweights as headliners, MacDonald vs. GSP, MMA's best class

It's fight week once again, which means this edition of the Twitter Mailbag gets right to work with questions about the upcoming UFC on FOX 8 card in Seattle.

After that, well, that's when we get into the fun stuff like light heavyweights who really want to be middleweights and heavyweights who want to be light heavyweights. Don't worry, we'll also find some time to talk discretionary bonuses, zombies of Korean origin, and broadcasting dream teams.

As always, you can direct your own question to @BenFowlkesMMA on Twitter.

* * * *

Maybe I'm just spending my time on the wrong websites (mainly that one where Garfield is removed from all the Garfield cartoons, filling them with a strangely touching existential dread), but I actually haven't seen too much complaining about Saturday night's flyweight headliner. And that's good, because what is there to complain about?

The 125-pound tilt between champ Demetrious Johnson and John Moraga at the top of the UFC on FOX 8 card is, after all, a title fight on free TV. If you complain that it's not a big enough title fight for the UFC's FOX series, then you can't also complain when the same title is being contested on pay-per-view. You can't complain that the flyweights aren't getting enough exposure either, because dude, it doesn't get much more exposed than a main event on FOX. How are we ever supposed to get to the point where fans won't complain about paying for flyweight fights if we also complain about getting their fights for free?

Point is, we've got to pick our complaints carefully, lest we turn into a bunch of jerks who will complain about absolutely anything. Or, more accurately, lest we continue to be those jerks indefinitely.

To be fair, Moraga didn't dump it all on Johnson's doorstep. But he is right that, as the champion, Johnson is the most consistently visible fighter in the UFC's 125-pound class. For fans who don't watch Facebook prelims, he might be the only flyweight they've ever seen more than once. It's reasonable to assume that those fans will make assumptions about the entire weight class based on what they see from Johnson, and at least so far we haven't seen anything too spectacular.

Look at the criticism of the flyweights in general and of Johnson in particular, and you'll see some similarities. The little guys, or so their detractors say, just bounce around the seemingly cavernous cage with displays of speed and footwork that are impressive, but ultimately result in very little violence. Flyweights don't finish, at least according to the people who have seen Johnson but not Moraga. So yeah, Johnson has to take a little of the responsibility for that. He is pretty darn bouncy in there. And no, he hasn't finished anyone in the UFC. If he wants people to shut up about it, he's got five rounds worth of chances to change that narrative on Saturday night.

For starters, the UFC could have not put his most recent fight on Facebook. That seems like the obvious answer, though one with the benefit of hindsight.

Still, because the division is so shallow, as you point out, the UFC should have been able to predict that the winner of Moraga's fight with Chris Cariaso at UFC 155 would probably end up in a flyweight title fight relatively soon thereafter. But instead of putting it on the main card (you can't tell me it wouldn't have been a better kickoff to the pay-per-view portion than Chris Leben vs. Derek Brunson) or even the FX portion of the prelims, the UFC stuck the only two flyweights in the lineup all the way at the bottom. That doesn't seem like a great plan for building future stars in a still-growing division.

If you want people to care about a title fight, it helps if they care about both fighters competing in it. Failing that, you'd like for fans to at least have heard of these guys before you try and promote one of them as the next potential champ.

Not necessarily. Between the superfight talk that just won't die and Georges St-Pierre's slow shuffle toward possible careers outside the cage, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if GSP was no longer in the welterweight picture by the time Rory MacDonald's case for a title shot becomes impossible to ignore. I also wouldn't be too terribly surprised if MacDonald gets beaten by Jake Ellenberger this weekend, which would shut down that teammate-vs.-teammate situation before it really starts.

Clearly, the 24-year-old MacDonald has a ton of talent and potential. At the same time, he doesn't have any wins over elite, full-time welterweights. He beat Mike Pyle, but so did Ellenberger. He looked good in a loss to Carlos Condit, but so did Ellenberger. He beat an over-the-hill B.J. Penn and an undersized Nate Diaz, while Ellenberger knocked out Jake Shields and Nate Marquardt.

This is a close enough matchup that I wouldn't be too surprised either way it went, but it does seem like maybe the hype has gotten ahead of the actual results when it comes to MacDonald. I can understand people feeling exciting about what he might become, but that doesn't mean he's there yet. We'll have to wait until Saturday night to find out.

Possibly. It certainly makes you wonder how big a role it played in Chael Sonnen's decision to move back down to middleweight after his fight with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, doesn't it?

In fact, without that shakeup at the top of the division, Sonnen's move doesn't make that much sense. Why go on TV before a fight with a former light heavyweight champ and announce that, once it's over, you're bolting from the weight class and heading back to the division where you've already lost two title fights? It makes the matchup with Rua seem suddenly meaningless. Maybe Sonnen likes his chances against Chris Weidman, or maybe he just likes his chances of snagging another big money title fight if he moves to a weight class where he hasn't already been throttled by the champ. Either way, it's hard to imagine him making the same move at the same time if Silva had come out on the winning end earlier this month.

Roy Nelson is a fighter with the virtues of his faults. Dude is stubborn as all hell, which serves him well in fights but maybe not so much in areas such as training and career management. He is literally and figuratively hard-headed, and he always has been. Before his last fight with Stipe Miocic, there were rumors that Nelson had burned too many bridges at home in Las Vegas and, for that reason, was having trouble finding quality training partners. By the time he got in the cage in Winnipeg, he looked like a man who'd either pushed himself too hard or not enough, though his sheer obstinance carried him through the full three rounds.

Now he's got the new contract he wanted, and he seems happy with the nine-fight deal ? at least for now. You have to wonder if the UFC wasn't at least partially motivated to lock him down for so long just to avoid having to renegotiate with him in a year or two. Will he fight all nine? My guess is probably not. He's 37 years old right now, and even if he fought at a consistent pace of three times a year, which is optimistic, he'd be 40 before this deal is done. In this sport, the guys who rely on stubbornness as much as Nelson does usually do so at the expense of career longevity.

It's getting there, but I think lightweight is still the most talent-rich division not only in the UFC, but in all of MMA. To support that claim, I'd point to the fact that at least one the men in the featherweight title picture is really a lightweight who figured he could drop the extra 10 pounds and get a shot quicker than if he stuck around in the crowded 155-pound class.
It seems odd that it would, because a) a win over Nelson right now wouldn't (and by wouldn't I mean shouldn't) earn you a title shot in the heavyweight division, and b) most people would probably want to see Cormier prove he can make light heavyweight before granting him a crack at the champ.

Word is that Cormier wants to bring his weight down gradually in anticipation of a potential move to 205 pounds, which is why this fight with Nelson makes sense to begin with. If Cormier wants to come in lighter than usual to see how his body reacts, who better to do it against than one of the less enormous heavyweights in the division? And if the UFC is going to let Cormier have a chance at knocking one of its existing heavyweight contenders further down the ranks, why not let it be Nelson, who's already out of the title picture for the time being?

If Nelson pulls off the upset and beats him, fine, he's back in the conversation and Cormier can still move down and get himself a win at light heavyweight to bolster his case for a shot at Jon Jones. Ideally, he would do that anyway.

Not really. Teixeira's run is impressive, but he still hasn't beaten any elite light heavyweights in the UFC. A win over Bader right now wouldn't change that, which is what sucks about this match-up for Teixeira. He absolutely cannot afford to lose if he wants to make his case for a title shot while he's still young, but beating a guy who's 3-3 in his past six fights doesn't propel you to the top. He can't become a top light heavyweight until he beats one, and he can't beat one if the UFC won't give him one. If Cormier does come straight down from heavyweight and into a title fight with Jones, Teixeira doesn't have to like it. He does, however, probably have to accept it.
I'm not sure if you're asking me to name my three favorite two-person broadcast teams (there aren't that many existing combos to choose from in this sport to begin with) or if you're asking me to put together a three-person dream team. Because it seems like a more interesting question, I'm going to assume it's the latter and tell you that if I had my way and if contractual obstacles were no issue, all big fights would get a three-person crew.

In the play-by-play spot, I'd want either Jon Anik or Mauro Ranallo, assuming Ranallo hasn't abandoned us for good in favor of boxing. In the color commentator spot, I'd want Joe Rogan, who is not without his faults but is generally a solid, dependable presence on the broadcast. The third spot I'd reserve for an ex-fighter analyst like Brian Stann or Pat Miletich. Both are excellent at explaining the finer technical points of the sport, without it feeling inaccessible to the newer fans. Maybe they could also come up with something new to say when Rogan goes off on another rant about steel cups or MMA glove designs.

It sure doesn't sound easy, and the odds only get longer if you've been on the shelf with injuries for over a year, as Chan Sung Jung has. Honestly, that's my biggest concern for "The Korean Zombie." Jose Aldo is tough enough as it is. Fighting him in Brazil is even tougher. But fighting him in Brazil while you're even just a little bit rusty from a long layoff? That sounds like the blueprint for a very bad night, if you ask me.
It's one of the issues, sure. The problem is, it's difficult to talk about, precisely because of the undisclosed nature of those discretionary bonuses. The UFC seems to want it both ways on this one. It won't tell us what it pays fighters in bonuses (unless they complain about their pay, and then we hear all about it), and it claims that the fighters want it this way. And yet, when we start having a discussion about fighter pay, the UFC somehow expects us to include these unreported figures in the conversation. We can't do that because we don't know exactly what the figures are. The UFC is essentially asking us to take its word for it that the fighters are getting plenty of money, which obviously we aren't going to do.

Talking to fighters about the discretionary bonuses, you get the sense that they're kept guessing as well. Sometimes they can double their pay with a performance that the UFC execs deem exciting enough. Other times they might get a couple grand extra for a so-so fight. Sometimes they keep checking the mailbox in the weeks after a fight, only to find there's no bonus coming at all.

You talk to the UFC and they tell you that fighters are feeling the financial love behind closed doors, don't you worry. Then you talk to the fighters and they tell you that there are times when they expected a little more appreciation than they found. As long as the bonuses stay private and undisclosed, we can't talk about them in any more than the vaguest of terms. Right now, what we know is that some guys get some extra money some of the time. They don't know exactly what they'll earn before the fight, and we rarely find out what they really made after the fact. That does not make for an informed and intelligent discussion on fighter pay, which might be exactly how the UFC wants it.

Maddow Blasts 'Fox News World' For Faux 'Outrage' Over DOJ's ...

Rachel Maddow went directly after ?Fox News world? last night for their mischaracterization of protests that followed George Zimmerman?s acquittal Saturday night. She contrasted Fox?s conspiracy theory-laden coverage about the Justice Department organizing the demonstrations with the ?real world? in which the DOJ has tried to ?keep all the protests peaceful.?

After showing footage from the largely non-violent protests that have developed over the last several days, Maddow explained that before Zimmerman was charged with the murder of Trayvon Martin, the DOJ dispatched a special unit called the ?Community Relations Service? to Sanford, Florida in an attempt to ?make sure everyone on both sides behaved peacefully.? She then pointed to recent reports from the conservative site Judicial Watch that claim the ?protests had been drummed up in a conspiracy by the Obama administration.?

?See, the protests weren?t real,? Maddow said emphasizing the absurdity of the claims, ?People weren?t actually upset. It was all organized by President Obama? for something.? But, as she demonstrated with video clips, the ?conspiracy theory? hasn?t only been prevalent in some ?dank corners of the internet? but also in some ?dank corners of TV.?

After showing an appearance by Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton with Fox?s Martha MacCallum, Maddow said, ?so says Fox News world on that subject.? In the ?real world,? she added, ?the Justice Department helped plan to keep protests peaceful.? But that hasn?t stopped Fox News from being ?outraged about all of that.?

Israeli embassy, lawmakers wrangle over Muslim- and Arab-Americans? entry to Israel

WASHINGTON (JTA) ? Israel?s embassy in Washington exchanged letters with a group of U.S. congressmen who sought answers about the treatment of Arab and Muslim Americans at Israel?s borders.

The June 4 congressional letter obtained Tuesday by JTA presses for answers on what the 15 signatories consider unfair treatment. It was initiated by Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), the first Muslim to be elected to Congress.

The letter notes reports that Israel profiles Muslim and Arab Americans; that this year Israel turned away an American who taught at a school in the West Bank; that some Americans receive ?Palestinian Authority Only? visas allowing them to stay only within the West Bank; and that Israel requires some U.S. citizens to turn on their computers or other devices and show them their email accounts.

?We ask that you work with us to ensure that all American citizens are treated equally at Israeli ports of entry,? the letter said.

In a June 12 reply, Israel?s ambassador to the U.S., Michael Oren, said that since 2002, in the midst of the barrage of terrorist attacks of the second intifada, Israel has restricted access to Israel for some Palestinian-Americans, requiring them to stay within the West Bank.

Oren also said in his letter that the 1993 Oslo Accords require Palestinians with U.S. citizenship to enter via Jordan?s Allenby Bridge. The requirement was a nod to Palestinian sovereignty, but the Palestinian Authority has not sought its enforcement for years.

Oren also likens the requirement to show authorities emails to inspections of electronic devices in other countries, including the United States, although he does not show instances of U.S. authorities requiring actual examination of emails.

?American citizens are accorded all the rights to which they are entitled at their entry to the State of Israel,? Oren wrote. ?Given the security challenges we face, every effort is extended in this regard.?

The embassy and Ellison?s office refused requests for comment on the letters, which were first revealed last week in an Associated Press story.

The backdrop to the exchange is a bid in Congress to add Israel to the visa waiver program that allows for travel between countries without visas.

While the proposed bills have strong backing, some lawmakers have insisted that Israel first clear up the matter of perceived discrimination at its borders.

Ellison and another signatory to the letter, Rep. Andre Carson (D-Ind.) are Muslims; one, Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.), is Jewish. Another signatory, Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.), the sole Republican, is of Palestinian descent.

Play about American activist performed in Israel

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A one-woman play about an American activist who was crushed to death by an Israeli military bulldozer in Gaza is being performed for Hebrew-speaking audiences for the first time. Producers hope the show will force Israelis to confront an issue that, 10 years later, is still stirring passions.

Rachel Corrie was killed in 2003 as she attempted to block the bulldozer from razing homes in the southern Gaza Strip. She has become a divisive figure since her death.

For pro-Palestinian activists, Corrie became a rallying cry and vivid image of what they say is Israel's harsh repression of the Palestinians.

Corrie belonged to the pro-Palestinian International Solidarity Movement, whose activists enter conflict zones and try to interfere with activities of Israel's military in the West Bank and Gaza, territories the Palestinians claim for their future state.

Many of the areas where they operate have been declared off-limits for civilians by the Israeli military, and most Israelis consider ISM activists like Corrie to be misguided, biased troublemakers and thrill seekers.

Israel captured the Gaza Strip, along with the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, in the 1967 Mideast war. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, two years after Corrie died.

"My Name is Rachel Corrie" was first staged in London in 2005 and has since courted controversy. A New York off-Broadway theater backed out of plans to stage the play in 2006, drawing charges of censorship from its creators. Performances in Toronto and Florida were canceled, reportedly after pressure from pro-Israel groups.

That drama has followed the play to Israel. The Hebrew version premiered briefly in March at a festival in Tel Aviv. On Sunday night, it opened at Jerusalem's Khan Theater. Both performances drew threats from politicians to cut the budgets of venues that stage the play.

Such opposition has not deterred the producers. They hope the Hebrew version will stimulate some introspection among audience members about Israel's activities in the Palestinian territories.

"(Israel) is the most natural place to hold the play. It's the most appropriate place, where the audience member gets an opportunity to ask himself how he leads his life and how the society he lives in makes decisions," said Ari Remez, the play's director. Remez said he hoped opening in Jerusalem, a city considered less open-minded than Tel Aviv, Israel's liberal cultural hub, would grant the play reach to a more diverse audience.

The play, a 90-minute monologue, was crafted from sections of diaries, letters and emails from Corrie's time in Gaza, along with childhood journals, to create a picture of a passionate and idealistic activist.

The play opened to a full house at the small theater in Jerusalem Sunday night.

Sivane Kretchner, the Israeli actress playing Corrie, flung a keffiyeh, a traditional Palestinian headscarf, around her neck as she delivered Corrie's mundane musings on daily life and grand epiphanies about the injustice she saw.

As the theater lights dimmed, the crackly voice of the bulldozer driver was heard communicating the incident over a military radio to his commander ? actual material that was used as evidence in a failed lawsuit by her family against the army.

The case has continued to attract attention in Israel through a civil suit her parents filed, two years after an internal army investigation ruled the death an accident and cleared the driver and other military personnel of any wrongdoing.

Last year, the court sided with the military.

Kretchner said she was moved by the English script and wanted to be part of the Hebrew version.

"I don't see Rachel Corrie as a controversial person," said Kretchner. "She had a beautiful soul, and she was able to look at something and say, this is right and this is wrong."

Corrie, who was 23, died during a Palestinian uprising, a time of heavy fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants. The Israeli army was undertaking systematic house demolitions in the densely populated, violent area along the Egyptian border, where Palestinian militants were using houses as end points for weapons smuggling tunnels.

Since her death, Palestinians in the West Bank have named a street and a restaurant after her. An Arabic version of the play opened in 2008 and toured Israel and the West Bank.

Corrie's parents, Cindy and Craig, who have seen the play in Icelandic, French and Turkish, welcomed the Hebrew version.

"To have it shown in Hebrew in Jerusalem brings Rachel's story full circle," said Cindy Corrie from her home in Olympia, Wash. "It brings it to an audience that needs to hear Rachel's words, to hear what she had to say." Craig Corrie called it "moving."

Opponents of the performance said they didn't want public money to fund such an event.

"(Corrie) was a self-professed Israel hater, and I don't think we need to glorify her name and to make a play based on her and if we do, then it should be done with private funds," David Hadari, deputy mayor of Jerusalem, told The Associated Press. The theater is partly funded by the municipality.

Despite Hadari's appeal, the Jerusalem municipality approved the theater's funding last week. In a statement, Mayor Nir Barkat said, "The municipality of Jerusalem does not censor content shown in any artistic performance."

Those who attended the opening said it left a strong impression.

"This play shatters a mythos that we didn't want to see," said Moshe Levy, an audience member who lives in a West Bank settlement outside Jerusalem. "It breaks that glass through which we hide reality, this painful reality that we need to deal with."

Guido: Longtime NFL scout enters Plum Hall of Fame

By George Guido

Published: Wednesday, July 10, 2013, 12:36?a.m.
Updated 5 hours ago

After starring in football and baseball at Plum High School, John Wojciechowski has parlayed his life's experiences into a NFL player personnel career that has served three classic franchises: the Steelers, the Cowboys and the Packers.

Wojciechowski is in his 17th NFL season as a scout and player development aide.

On Nov. 14, he will join seven others in this year's Plum Sports Hall of Fame induction class.

The ninth annual banquet will be at Edgewood Country Club at 7 p.m.

Wojciechowski, a 1992 Plum graduate, was named first-team, all-conference in football and baseball. He was a three-year captain and a football All-American at Duquesne University where he held the school record for career sacks as a defensive end.

Wojciechowski also was a three-year starter in baseball with the Dukes. He is an area scout for the Packers.

There are plenty of other people with Pittsburgh ties in Green Bay.

Head coach Mike McCarthy grew up in the Greenfield section of Pittsburgh and attended the former Bishop Boyle High School in Homestead; offensive coordinator Tommy Clements was one of the most celebrated area athletes in the early '70s at Canevin Catholic High School (now Bishop Canevin); defensive coordinator Dom Capers held the same position with the Steelers; outside linebackers coach Kevin Greene and secondary coach Darren Perry played for the Steelers; and running backs coach Alex Van Pelt started four years at quarterback for Pitt.

Also set for induction is Lou Klauss, who was Plum's wrestling coach for 11 seasons and helped found the community's junior wrestling program.

He also coached Plum to WPIAL team golf titles in 1968-69.

John Ratesic will be inducted as a coach and an administrator. He was the school's assistant principal for 20 years and principal for five years and helped create the Hall of Fame. Ratesic was also a well-liked, long-time WPIAL football steering committee member.

Here are the other inductees:

? Steve Marsalese (1981). After lettering in football, basketball, volleyball and track, he was a member of the school's 1981 PIAA championship volleyball team. He was an all-state honorable mention selection in football in 1980.

? Jeff Schmeck (1976). An all-state honorable mention pick at center from Plum's first WPIAL football playoff team in 1975, he also held the school record in the shot put, since broken, at 55 feet, 9 inches.

? Erica Van Tassel Carter (1994). A three-time WPIAL champion in swimming, Van Tassel Carter qualified for 12 PIAA championship events during her career. She earned a swimming scholarship to Penn State and was a four-time academic all-American.

? Monica Zalevsky Williams (1984). As a letterwinner in volleyball, basketball and track, Zalevsky Williams was a member of the school's volleyball team that defeated North Allegheny for the 1984 PIAA title. She later excelled in volleyball and basketball at Carnegie Mellon University.

? Paul Shish (1966). A posthumous inductee, Shish participated in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was all-WPIAL in football and the Plum Athlete of the Year for the 1965-66 academic year. He earned a football scholarship to Clemson and played four years for the Tigers.

11 Important Factors to Consider Before You Buy a Franchise

buy a franchise

For would-be (or current) entrepreneurs, becoming a franchisee, especially for a successful outfit, seems like a shorter path to profitability. That said, the devil?s in the details ? and there?s more to a franchise opportunity than upfront costs and prior successes.

We asked members of the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), an invitation-only organization comprised of the country?s most promising young entrepreneurs, the following question to find out what factors to consider when evaluating a potential franchising opportunity:

?What?s one often overlooked thing you should consider when evaluating a franchising opportunity??

Here?s what YEC community members had to say:

1. Check for Proven Systems

?When you buy a franchise, you?re buying a proven business model. But if that opportunity doesn?t come with systems that work, then you?ll be flying blind. There should be systems for everything from payroll and marketing to client services and upsells. You also want to find out if training is included or if you?ll be left to figure out the system on your own.??~ Kelly Azevedo, She?s Got Systems

2. Ask How They Treat Their First Franchisees

?It is important to track how the original founders of the company have treated their first franchisees to see if it is a right fit for you. Go and make the personal visit to the first group of franchisees if the company is not willing to let you meet them this is definitely a red flag. Remember, once you sign an agreement it is really hard and expensive to buy yourself out of one. ??~ Derek Capo, Next Step China

3. Examine Earnings Potential

?It can be tricky to evaluate the profitability of a franchise, because you can?t rely on profitability from other franchise locations ? that may be affected by location and a variety of other factors. Get a comprehensive list of the financials from other franchises, investigate how the successful ones became profitable, and find out whether other franchises have recently failed.??~ Andrew Schrage, Money Crashers Personal Finance

4. Consider Coaching to be Critical

?One often overlooked, though extremely important, factor to consider when evaluating a franchising opportunity is whether the franchisor offers a well-thought-out, structured and proven coaching program. Great franchisors understand that their success hinges on each of their franchisee?s abilities to be entrepreneurial & savvy. Great franchises will invest in their franchisees? development.??~ SeanKelly, HUMAN (Helping Unite Mankind And Nutrition)

5. Make Sure they Have Already Succeeded

?Some franchises need specific talents or connections to be successful. Before you decide to take on a franchising opportunity, research who has already done well with that franchise. See if there are any common factors ? and if you have the necessary characteristics, as well. ??~ Thursday Bram, Hyper Modern Consulting

6. Acquire Territory Exclusivity

?My primary concern when I consider franchising (after the strength of the brand) is whether I can get exclusive territory. If that?s not possible for whatever reason, it makes it much tougher to build and defend a profitable niche.??~ Erik Severinghaus, SimpleRelevance

7. Know the True Costs of Being a Franchisee

?I review many franchise agreements. There are often hidden fees in addition to the royalty payments, such as required marketing fees or training. Be sure you know the true cost of being a franchisee to make sure the franchise opportunity is the best one for you and your family.??~ Doug Bend, Bend Law Group, PC

8. Look for Knowledge-Sharing Among Franchisees

?Any good franchise will align the interests of the franchise and the franchisees. One way to enhance your odds of success is to franchise from an organization that connects all of its franchisees. Because you will have territorial protection, you should feel free sharing with (and asking questions of) other peer franchisees. Their experiences will help put you on the right track.??~ Aaron Schwartz, Modify Watches

9. Seek Advice From Existing Franchisees

?What do the company?s fellow franchisees think? It?s easy to get swept away in the great information the company espouses, but what?s it really like? I advise every potential franchisor to sit down with someone who has converted and ask him the tough questions. Existing franchisors should be willing to mentor newbies. Their enthusiasm should be contagious!??~ Kuba Jewgieniew, Realty ONE Group

10. Analyze Market Opportunity

?It?s easy to get lost in the FDD numbers and lose sight of the big picture. The dollars and cents are important, but they?re also irrelevant if you find out a few months into owning the franchise that your personality doesn?t fit with the culture. Attend the ?Discovery Day,? get a feel for the company?s values and vision, and make sure you mesh well with the people behind the brand.??~ Nick Friedman, College Hunks Hauling Junk and College Hunks Moving

11. Get Comfortable With Company Operations

?When evaluating a franchising opportunity, you should determine if you are comfortable with the extent to which you can modify operations. Quite often, franchises have strict rules on how to operate the business ? often not allowing innovative franchisees to explore new marketing strategies or product positioning. Make sure you are comfortable with what you won?t be allowed to change.??~ Chuck Cohn, Varsity Tutors

Egypt Protests: Muslim Brotherhood Says 35 Supporters Killed During Cairo Demonstration

By Tom Perry and Alexander Dziadosz

CAIRO, July 8 (Reuters) - At least 42 people were killed on Monday when Islamist demonstrators enraged by the military overthrow of Egypt's elected President Mohamed Mursi said the army opened fire during morning prayers at the Cairo barracks where he is being held.

But the military said "a terrorist group" tried to storm the Republican Guard compound and one army officer had been killed and 40 wounded. Soldiers returned fire when they were attacked by armed assailants, a military source said.

The emergency services said more than 320 were wounded in a sharp escalation of Egypt's political crisis, and Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood urged people to rise up against the army, which they accuse of a military coup to remove the elected leader.

At a hospital near the Rabaa Adawia mosque where Islamists have camped out since Mursi was toppled on Wednesday, rooms were crammed with people wounded in the violence, sheets were stained with blood and medics rushed to attend to the wounded.

As an immediate consequence, the ultra-conservative Islamist Nour party, which initially backed the military intervention, said it was withdrawing from stalled negotiations to form an interim government for the transition to fresh elections.

The military has said that the overthrow was not a coup, and it was enforcing the will of the people after millions took to the streets on June 30 to call for his resignation.

But pro- and anti-Mursi protests took place in Cairo, Alexandria and other cities, and resulted in clashes on Friday and Saturday that left 35 dead.

It leaves the Arab world's largest nation of 84 million people in a perilous state, with the risk of further enmity between people on either side of the political divide while an economic crisis deepens.

SHOTS DURING PRAYERS

Abdelaziz Abdelshakua, from Sharqia Province northeast of Cairo, was wounded in his right leg with what he says was a live round.

"We were praying the dawn prayer and we heard there was shooting," he said, adding an army officer assured them no one was shooting, then suddenly they came under fire from the direction of the Republican Guard.

"They shot us with teargas, birdshot, rubber bullets -- everything. Then they used live bullets."

A Reuters journalist at the scene saw first aid helpers attempting mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on a dying man.

Al Jazeera's Egypt channel showed footage from inside a makeshift clinic near the scene of the violence, where Mursi supporters attempted to treat bloodied men.

Seven dead bodies were lined up in a row, covered in blankets and an Egyptian flag. A man placed a portrait of Mursi on one of the corpses.

Footage broadcast by state TV showed Mursi supporters throwing rocks at soldiers in riot gear on one of the main roads leading to Cairo airport.

Young men, some carrying sticks, crouched behind a building, emerging to throw petrol bombs before retreating again.

State-run television showed soldiers carrying a wounded comrade along a rock-strewn road, and news footage zoomed in on a handful of protesters firing crude handguns during clashes.

The rest of the city was for the most part calm, though armoured military vehicles closed bridges over the Nile to traffic following the violence.

The military overthrew Morsi on Wednesday after mass nationwide demonstrations led by youth activists demanding his resignation. The Brotherhood denounced the intervention as a coup and vowed peaceful resistance.

POLITICAL IMPASSE

Talks on forming a new government were already in trouble before Monday's shooting, after the Nour Party rejected two liberal-minded candidates for prime minister proposed by interim head of state Adli Mansour.

Nour, Egypt's second biggest Islamist party, which is vital to give the new authorities a veneer of Islamist backing, said it had withdrawn from the negotiations in protest at what it called the "massacre at the Republican Guard (compound)".

"The party decided the complete withdrawal from political participation in what is known as the road map," it said.

The military can ill afford a lengthy political vacuum at a time of violent upheaval and economic stagnation.

Scenes of running street battles between pro- and anti-Mursi demonstrators in Cairo, Alexandria and cities across the country have alarmed Egypt's allies, including key aid donors the United States and Europe, and Israel, with which Egypt has had a U.S.-backed peace treaty since 1979.

The violence has also shocked Egyptians, growing tired of the turmoil that began two-and-a-half years ago with the overthrow of autocrat Hosni Mubarak in a popular uprising.

In one of the most shocking scenes of the last week, video footage circulated on social and state media of what appeared to be Mursi supporters throwing two youths from a concrete tower on to a roof in the port city of Alexandria.

The images, stills from which were published on the front page of the state-run Al-Akhbar newspaper on Sunday, could not be independently verified.

On Sunday, huge crowds numbering hundreds of thousands gathered in different parts of Cairo and were peaceful, but nonetheless a reminder of the risks of further instability.

BITTER BLOW

For many Islamists, the overthrow of Egypt's first freely elected president was a bitter reversal that raised fears of a return to the suppression they endured for decades under autocratic rulers like Mubarak.

On the other side of the political divide, millions of Egyptians were happy to see the back of a leader they believed was orchestrating a creeping Islamist takeover of the state - a charge the Brotherhood has vehemently denied.

Washington has not condemned the military takeover or called it a coup, prompting suspicion within the Brotherhood that it tacitly supports the overthrow.

Obama has ordered a review to determine whether annual U.S. assistance of $1.5 billion, most of which goes to the Egyptian military, should be cut off as required by law if a country's military ousts a democratically elected leader.

Egypt can ill afford to lose foreign aid. The country appears headed for a looming funding crunch unless it can quickly access money from overseas. The local currency has lost 11 percent of its value since late last year.

Obama turns to tech to help gov't pack a punch

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Congress is hardly falling over itself to fulfill President Barack Obama's legislative wish list, and Americans by and large think of Uncle Sam as a spendthrift.

So Obama turned Monday to what he can control ? the federal bureaucracy ? to boast of what he's done to beget a smarter, high-tech government, and to promise more innovations are in the works.

It was iPads and Google and mobile apps at the White House ? the vernacular of a younger generation whose tech savvy helped launch Obama in 2008 and whose ingenuity Obama hopes to channel in a second-term effort to make government more accessible to the American taxpayer.

"We are the first to confess that progress has not always come quick, and major challenges still remain," Obama said, surrounded by Vice President Joe Biden and nearly a dozen Cabinet members. "But we've made huge swaths of your government more efficient and more transparent and more accountable than ever before."

Touting "smarter, faster and better ways" to deliver government services, Obama pointed to innovations undertaken by his administration: the Federal Emergency Management Agency's use of Internet apps to allow hurricane victims to register for help, the truncating of an insurance application prototype for new health care exchanges, and more than 75,000 sets of government data posted to a downloadable website.

But even those advances have, in some cases, served as reminders about why Americans remain skeptical that the government can be a model of efficiency and competence. The website, www.data.gov, has frustrated many users who say the data is limited, error-prone and hard to use. And the administration pruned the insurance application from 21 pages to five ? three, by Obama's count ? only after widespread griping that they were as bad as tax forms and might cause uninsured people to give up in frustration.

Still, with the Republican-controlled House blocking much of Obama's agenda, his administration is eager to show it's engaged in transforming the government and making the most out of his authority, lawmakers be darned. It's an approach the White House has deployed on other fronts ? on gun control, where a set of executive actions became the focus after the Senate nixed a legislative package, and more recently on climate change, where Obama is turning to federal regulators to do what Congress says it will not.

"We can't take comfort in just being cynical," Obama said. "We all have a stake in government's success because the government is us."

Such cynicism is difficult to overcome. Only 1 in 5 people feel they can trust Washington to do what's right, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll in April. A year earlier, the Pew Research Center found that 71 percent of Americans describe the federal government as generally inefficient. Clear majorities also felt the government is careless with taxpayer money and doesn't address people's needs.

To that end, Obama announced a redoubled second-term effort to make government smarter and more accountable. He offered few specifics, mentioning only briefly that an ongoing project seeks to let Internet users auto-fill government forms just like online shopping websites. He said his budget director, Sylvia Mathews Burwell, would lead the effort.

Weidman KO's Anderson Silva at UFC 162 to take middleweight title - News | FOX Sports on MSN

Chris Weidman sent a shock wave through mixed martial arts, stopping Anderson Silva in the second round of the main event at UFC 162 to become the new middleweight champion on Saturday night.

Silva talked, taunted and dared Weidman to engage him. When the champion lowered his hands early in the second round, Weidman caught him with a short left that sent the MMA star to the mat. Weidman pounced and landed a few more shots that forced referee Herb Dean to stop the fight at 1:18.

"I felt destined for this," Weidman said. "It was far-fetched, but I imagined it so many times before in my head."

The win put an end to Silva's nearly seven-year reign atop the UFC middleweight division and his 17-fight win streak.

"I worked for this fight, Chris Weidman is the best now. He is the champion," Silva said. "I've had the belt for a long time. I'm tired."

The former champion fell to 33-5 with the loss.

"(Silva) was an idol of mine. I didn't want to mention it in the camp," said Weidman (10-0), who earned knockout of the night award. "I looked up to him for many years."

In the co-main event in front of a capacity crowd at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar outwrestled and outstruck Charles Oliveira to get the win by unanimous decision.

Fighting in his first non-title fight in more than 3 years, Edgar looked sharp and utilized excellent footwork to avoid Oliveira. The first two rounds were close, but the third saw Edgar land a number of clean power punches and pull away for the win.

"I thought I had him hurt in the third, but he showed some toughness," said Edgar, who improved to 15-4-1 and placed himself in title contention with the win. Oliveira fell to 16-4.

On the main card, Mark Munoz and Tim Kennedy each earned unanimous decision victories and Cub Swanson bested Dennis Siver in a battle of highly ranked featherweights with a third round TKO.

Switched On: Hard drives face hard truths

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

DNP Switched On Hard drives face hard truths

The PlayStation 4's is upgradeable; the Xbox One's is not. For at least the second consecutive generation (the third for the Xbox), hard drives will be offered as part of the gaming experience for two of the home video game powerhouses: Microsoft and Sony. For the Xbox line, which offered a model without a hard drive in the last generation, the inclusion of an internal HDD represents, along with its x86 processor, a return to the approach Microsoft took with the original Xbox.

Indeed, the Xbox One will load disc-based games onto the hard drive automatically. Both Sony and Microsoft will also offer access via the cloud. In fact, following up on its purchase of Gaikai, Sony plans to offer a range of gaming from the cloud to multiple platforms. This may include older titles that it cannot support on the PlayStation 4 due to a lack of native backward compatibility. If such capability is expected to work, why bother to have hard drives in these consoles at all? Indeed, hardware makers of many stripes are starting to ask that question.

Snowden's fate unclear despite asylum offers

MOSCOW (AP) ? Edward Snowden has found supporters in Latin America, including Venezuela and Nicaragua, who have offered him asylum. But many obstacles stand in the way of the fugitive NSA leaker from leaving a Russian airport ? chief among them the power and influence of the United States.

Because Snowden's U.S. passport has been revoked, the logistics of him departing are complicated. Despite making the asylum offer Friday, Venezuela and Nicaragua haven't indicated they would help Snowden by issuing a travel document, which he would need to leave Russia.

The former NSA systems analyst, who is charged with violating U.S. espionage laws, is believed to be stuck in the transit area of Moscow's main international airport after arriving June 23 from Hong Kong.

Russia doesn't appear willing to help him leave the airport, with Kremlin spokesman Alexei Pavlov saying Saturday the issue of Snowden's travel documents is "not our business." On Monday, President Vladimir Putin said Snowden would be offered asylum in Russia if he stopped leaking U.S. secrets. Snowden then withdrew his Russian asylum bid, a Russian official said.

While President Barack Obama has publicly displayed a relaxed attitude toward Snowden's movements, saying last month that he wouldn't be "scrambling jets" to capture him, other senior U.S. officials have used unusually harsh language that they want him back.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said China had "unquestionably" damaged its relationship with Washington for not returning Snowden, who recently turned 30, from semi-autonomous Hong Kong while he was still there.

"The Chinese have emphasized the importance of building mutual trust," Carney said last month. "We think that they have dealt that effort a serious setback. If we cannot count on them to honor their legal extradition obligations, then there is a problem."

China may be reluctant to further complicate its relationship with the U.S. by allowing Snowden back in Hong Kong, even if only as a transfer point to Latin America.

Snowden has asked for asylum in more than 20 countries and many have turned him down. WikiLeaks, which has been helping Snowden, said Friday he had submitted asylum applications to six new countries, which the secret-spilling website declined to identify "due to attempted U.S. interference."

The asylum offers from Venezuela and Nicaragua came one day after leftist South American leaders gathered to denounce the rerouting of Bolivian President Evo Morales' plane over Europe amid reports that the fugitive American was aboard.

Spain says it had been warned along with other European countries that Snowden was aboard the Bolivian presidential plane, an acknowledgement the manhunt for the fugitive leaker had something to do with the plane's unexpected diversion to Austria. It is unclear whether Washington warned Madrid about the Bolivian president's plane.

U.S. officials declined to comment on the grounding of the plane. They said they won't give details about their conversations with European countries, except to say that they have stated Washington's general position that it wants Snowden back.

Snowden, who on Saturday afternoon wasn't on an Interpol list of people for whom international arrest warrants have been issued, had booked a seat on a Havana-bound flight on June 24, but never made it.

Direct Havana flights, operated by Aeroflot from Moscow's main airport five times a week, are the easiest option of reaching Latin America from Moscow. But the Moscow-Havana's travel path passes over mainland U.S., raising the chances of it being grounded. There are other routes, but there is no assurance he'd have free passage.

Shepherd University's Martinsburg Center moving forward

MARTINSBURG - More than 300 people have been invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony later this month that will officially open Shepherd University's Martinsburg Center for Graduate and Professional Studies, but there's already a lot of activity at - and interest in - the new local facility.

While director Jim Klein is also excited about an Aug. 6 open house for the public, many prospective students have already stopped by to talk and learn more about how their educational needs can be met here, he said.

Although the new school will officially open Aug. 26 when the first full semester gets underway, some summer classes are already being held, Klein said.

"We're fully launched and ready to go. Even the classrooms already have state-of-the-art technology in them," he said.

It's also exciting to think about how many local people - as well as from surrounding communities, including Washington County, Md. and Frederick County, Va. - will benefit from the availability of programs aimed at students who are working but also want to complete a college degree, Klein said.

"Current survey data collected by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission indicates that over 800 students in the Eastern Panhandle alone have stopped attending college before completing their bachelor's degree," he said.

Despite Berkeley County's continuing growth, local data shows that only 10 percent of the county's workforce has a bachelor's degree, Klein said.

"However, the Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce's 2011 Workforce Needs Report shows that 56 percent of the area's employers require a bachelor's degree as a condition of employment, so that helps tell the story. There is a clear need here," he said.

Shepherd officials believe the new center's Regents of Bachelor of Arts program will help "improve these local statistics," Klein said.

Educational coordinator Beth Thomas has been hired to work with Martinsburg Center students completing their bachelor's degree through the RBA program, a flexible option that can assess credit for work experience through a portfolio review process.

"This program is designed for adult learners because you must have been out of high school for at least four years. But is a very flexible degree and students can mold it to what they need it to be. It is multi-faceted and depends on the student," Thomas said.

For example, it is possible to get credit towards a degree based on time spent in the military, she said.

The new center is housed in a three-story building off Edwin Miller Boulevard at 261 Aikens Center. Course offerings include undergraduate education and regents bachelor of arts degrees. Master's degree programs include courses in business, health care and public administration.

Sun Jul 07 '13 Announcement from CommBadge: 'Star Trek' Inspired Communicator for iPhone & Android

Dear CommBadge Supporters;

We are happy to say that we have been making really great progress. Again, we extend our sincere apologies for the shipping delays. We can finally see the production-light at the end of the tunnel! Here?s the latest updates;

Firmware

Our firmware is 98% complete, we?ve been testing it for a couple of months and have ironed out most of the issues. Last week we began our first testing with iOS 7 beta 1. Apple implemented some new Bluetooth protocols in iOS 7 that will allow us to do some really awesome new things, such as access to Notification Center. We will keep you posted on this in a future update.

PCB

The PCB layout is complete! The next step is testing a dozen or so prototypes. We hope to have these prototypes in hand by the end of this month. After that, it?s time for full production.

Assembly

We had to make a small redesign on one of the plastic casing components. While this was a slight timeline setback, we were able to shed another 0.5mm from the overall thickness of all CommBadge models. We know it?s not much, but it shows our commitment to bring you only the very best product we can possibly build.

The sense of production excitement at team CommBadge is growing steadily now, day by day. We hope you will start to feel, like we can, that we are truly making progress and moving very close to production and fulfillment.

Just as a reminder, if you have a change of address you will still be given a chance to update your information after we officially announce the shipping timeline. Again, we thank everyone for their patience and support!

Best regards,
The CommBadge Team

Ford Flex styling is standout feature

By Ann M. Job/The Associated Press

The bold, boxy exterior of the Ford Flex is such a forceful statement, it can distract from the other notable features of this generously sized, six- to seven-passenger crossover vehicle.

But Flex stylists aren't retreating. For 2013, they updated the Flex front end with new fascia, grille and headlights for a more impactful appearance.

Even the blue Ford logo has been removed from the grille now, leaving the word "Flex" spelled out in large letters across the front edge of the hood.

If this is not enough of a distinctive look, Flex buyers can opt for a roof color that's different from the body of the vehicle. As an example, the test 2013 Flex came with a Silver, two-tone roof atop a body painted Deep Impact Blue.

Try finding this combination on a factory-built Honda Pilot or Dodge .

The Flex also is one of the few large people haulers that offers a turbocharged, gasoline V-6. Ford's EcoBoost V-6 generates 365 horsepower and 350 foot-pounds of torque at 3,500 rpm in the hefty, 4,800-pound Flex. This compares with the 250-horsepower, non-turbo V-6 with 253 foot-pounds of torque at 4,800 rpm that's the only engine available in the Pilot.

Consumer Reports lists the Flex as a recommended buy with average reliability overall, but prices -- particularly for a Flex with EcoBoost engine -- can be eye opening.

Starting manufacturer's suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $31,795 for a base 2013 Flex SE with front-wheel drive. This

base model comes with naturally aspirated, 287-horsepower V-6 and cloth seats with middle second row that's a bench. The lowest starting retail price, including destination charge, for a 2013 Flex with all-wheel drive is $36,145 and this also includes the non-turbo V-6. The lowest starting MSRP and destination charge for a 2013 Flex with the turbo V-6 is $45,195.

This luxury-segment price stems from the fact the turbo is only available on the top-of-the-line Flex Limited which comes with standard luxury features such as perforated leather seats, 19-inch wheels, blind-spot monitor, navigation system and Sony audio with 12 speakers. Also, the turbo engine is only in the 2013 Flex Limited with all-wheel drive.

In comparison, the starting MSRP, including destination charge, for a base, 2013 Pilot with front-wheel drive is $30,350, and a 2013 Dodge Durango which has three rows of seats and a 290-horsepower, naturally aspirated V-6, has a starting retail price of $30,490 with rear-wheel drive.

The Flex can be difficult to describe. Some people call it a crossover SUV because it sits lower to the pavement than a traditional SUV and has more car-like ride and handling. But others see the Flex exterior shape as a wagon, albeit one that stretches 17 feet in overall length and stands 5.7 feet tall.

These dimensions make the Flex longer than the Pilot and but shorter in height.

But then, the Flex does not have as low a floor as a minivan does, and it requires a bit more work than a minivan to get inside to the third row.

Whether it's the odd looks, the difficulty in describing what the Flex is or the pricing, the Flex is the lowest-selling Ford-branded SUV/crossover/wagon. Sales last calendar year totaled 28,224, which is only a quarter of the total U.S. sales for the Pilot. And so far in calendar 2013, Flex sales are down another 22 percent from what they were last year at this time.

Still, the roomy interior of the tester was impressive. Front-seat passengers get nearly 42 inches of headroom and nearly 41 inches of legroom. In comparison, front-seat headroom in the Pilot is 40 inches, with 41.4 inches of legroom.

In the second row, Flex riders can have an amazing 44 inches of legroom as the separate captain's chairs can slide fore and aft to adjust legroom between second and third rows.

Meantime, even adults can sit decently comfortable in the Flex's third row seats for two with an impressive 38.7 inches of headroom -- vs. 37.8 inches in the Durango -- and legroom of 33.3 inches. This third-row legroom surpasses the 31.5 inches in the Durango and 32.1 inches in the back of the Pilot.

The Flex dashboard can appear a bit massive, but the selection of soft-touch plastics and textures looked good in the test vehicle.

But the sizable metal pillars at the sides of the windshield were major obstacles for a driver trying to make turns into crosswalks.

Because the Flex tester had the turbo, it came with suspension tuned for a bit tighter body control than a base Flex. As a result, the test vehicle rode through twisty mountain roads without conveying a loose feeling of uncontrolled weight shift back and forth.

There was a less tippy feeling overall, but passengers felt road vibrations, and the optional 20-inch wheels sometimes sent strong impacts from potholes through the vehicle.

The uplevel, 3.5-liter, double overhead cam, turbocharged V-6 delivered power smoothly and strongly and worked through a six-speed automatic.

In the Limited, there are paddle shifters at the steering wheel so a sporty-minded driver can select forward gear shifts on his or her own. But it's debatable how many Flex buyers want to use this feature.

Fuel economy isn't great, even when the Flex carries only one person and no cargo. The tester averaged just 18 miles per gallon, which is on par with the federal government ratings.

Some 2013 Flex models were among nearly 400,000 Ford vehicles recalled late last month because a fuel module may crack and cause fuel to leak, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
