Pebbly rocks testify to old streambed on Mars

May 30, 2013 ? Detailed analysis and review have borne out researchers' initial interpretation of pebble-containing slabs that NASA's Mars rover Curiosity investigated last year: They are part of an ancient streambed.

The rocks are the first ever found on Mars that contain streambed gravels. The sizes and shapes of the gravels embedded in these conglomerate rocks -- from the size of sand particles to the size of golf balls -- enabled researchers to calculate the depth and speed of the water that once flowed at this location.

"We completed more rigorous quantification of the outcrops to characterize the size distribution and roundness of the pebbles and sand that make up these conglomerates," said Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute, Tucson, Ariz., lead author of a report about them in the journal Science this week. "We ended up with a calculation in the same range as our initial estimate last fall. At a minimum, the stream was flowing at a speed equivalent to a walking pace -- a meter, or three feet, per second -- and it was ankle-deep to hip-deep."

Three pavement-like rocks examined with the telephoto capability of Curiosity's Mast Camera (Mastcam) during the rover's first 40 days on Mars are the basis for the new report. One, "Goulburn," is immediately adjacent to the rover's "Bradbury Landing" touchdown site. The other two, "Link" and "Hottah," are about 165 and 330 feet (50 and 100 meters) to the southeast. Researchers also used the rover's laser-shooting Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) instrument to investigate the Link rock.

"These conglomerates look amazingly like streambed deposits on Earth," Williams said. "Most people are familiar with rounded river pebbles. Maybe you've picked up a smoothed, round rock to skip across the water. Seeing something so familiar on another world is exciting and also gratifying."

The larger pebbles are not distributed evenly in the conglomerate rocks. In Hottah, researchers detected alternating pebble-rich layers and sand layers. This is common in streambed deposits on Earth and provides additional evidence for stream flow on Mars. In addition, many of the pebbles are touching each other, a sign that they rolled along the bed of a stream.

"Our analysis of the amount of rounding of the pebbles provided further information," said Sanjeev Gupta of Imperial College, London, a co-author of the new report. "The rounding indicates sustained flow. It occurs as pebbles hit each other multiple times. This wasn't a one-off flow. It was sustained, certainly more than weeks or months, though we can't say exactly how long."

The stream carried the gravels at least a few miles, or kilometers, the researchers estimated.

The atmosphere of modern Mars is too thin to make a sustained stream flow of water possible, though the planet holds large quantities of water ice. Several types of evidence have indicated that ancient Mars had diverse environments with liquid water. However, none but these rocks found by Curiosity could provide the type of stream flow information published this week. Curiosity's images of conglomerate rocks indicate that atmospheric conditions at Gale Crater once enabled the flow of liquid water on the Martian surface.

During a two-year prime mission, researchers are using Curiosity's 10 science instruments to assess the environmental history in Gale Crater on Mars, where the rover has found evidence of ancient environmental conditions favorable for microbial life.

Sears Plans To Retrofit 2,500 "Ghostbox" Stores As Data Centers

Sears Plans To Retrofit 2,500 "Ghostbox" Stores As Data Centers

There are over a billion square feet of vacant commercial space in the US right now, most of it in the form of big box stores. This being America, we?ve come up with plenty of intelligent ways to reuse the department stores at which we can no longer afford to shop: Churches. Parks. Clinics. And now, data centers.

This month, Sears announced the formation of a stand-alone company?the ominously-named Ubiquity Critical Environments LLC?to handle to conversion of thousands of Sears and KMart stores into data centers. Over the next few years, Ubiquity Critical will assess and convert more than 2,500 individual stores, basing its decision on store performance and demand. Ultimately, the structural skeletons of these stores will house servers, chillers, and generators, as well as roof-mounted antennas. In a crushingly ironic twist, the centers will target medium-sized e-commerce retailers?the very companies helping to put department stores out of business.

According to Crain?s, Ubiquity Critical?s name is derived from a compelling bit of data about Sears? now-dwindling empire: 71 percent of the U.S. population lives within 10 miles of one of its buildings. It?s likely that we?ll see the centers pop up in areas like Colorado and Texas, where fledgling Internet businesses are more common than, say, rural Kansas:

Only properties in large data center markets such as Chicago and Dallas, on sites with the best access to power and fiber, will be suitable. Sears' properties likely will serve lower-tier users with smaller budgets. Demand is high for data storage, particularly for small and midsized companies that don't need the top-tier facilities that serve banks, airlines and other businesses that can't afford to go offline even for a moment.

The phenomenon of the ?ghostboxes? is well known, and Sears? decision definitely isn?t without precedent. After a tornado devastated Joplin, Missouri in 2011, the town converted an abandoned mall into a replacement high school in less than two months. Another ghostbox?this one in Wisconsin?recently re-opened as an alternative church. The same goes for parks, libraries, and playgrounds. But the idea that the physical infrastructure that powered the last century's retail revolution are now serving as skeleton housing for this era? That's new. [Crain's via Motherboard]

Lebanon parliament set to extend term amid turmoil

BEIRUT (AP) ? Lebanon's parliament moved Wednesday to extend its term, skipping scheduled elections because of the country's deteriorating security linked to the civil war next door in Syria.

The decision is a blow to Lebanon's tradition of free elections in a region known for autocratic governments, but it may help lower tensions at a critical time for the fragile and deeply divided country.

The extension of the 128-seat legislature's term by up to 18 months, which was set for a vote Friday, marks the first time that parliament has had to extend its term since Lebanon's own civil war ended in 1975-90, and underlines the growing turmoil as a result of the Syrian conflict.

Sectarian clashes tied to Syria's war have broken out with increasing regularity in Lebanon, a country with a religious divide that mirrors that of its neighbor. Rockets fired across the frontier have struck Lebanese border villages with growing frequency, killing several people ? including a 20-year-old student this week.

At least 28 people have been killed and more than 200 wounded in battles in the northern city of Tripoli recently as supporters and opponents of President Bashar Assad lobbed mortar shells and fired heavy machine guns at each other.

That violence, coupled with the militant Lebanese Hezbollah group's direct intervention in the Syrian conflict on the side of the Assad regime, has deeply shaken Lebanon, and it threatens to throw off the country's precarious sectarian balance.

The conflict also has forced some 500,000 Syrians to seek refuge in Lebanon, putting a severe strain on the country of 4 million to cope with the influx.

"We live in a very dangerous moment in our history. We have little civil wars going on in parts of the country. Logistically, it's not feasible to have elections take place right now," said Kamel Wazne, founder and director of the Center for American Strategic Studies in Beirut.

He said extending parliament's mandate removes one logistical issue and will prevent a power vacuum from forming in a country already divided along sectarian and regional lines.

Although most political factions agreed on the action as a way out of the crisis, President Michel Suleiman said he was deeply opposed to it.

"Arab countries are experiencing bloodshed so that they may have elections, and we go and do the opposite? This is not the message that we want to send to the world," he told Future TV in an interview Wednesday night.

In addition to the security situation, Lebanese politicians have been bickering for months, unable to agree on a law to govern elections, originally set for June 16.

Outgoing Prime Minister Najib Mikati abruptly resigned in March over a political deadlock between Lebanon's two main political camps and infighting in his government, dominated by Hezbollah.

Lebanon effectively has been without a government since then, although Mikati's Cabinet stayed on in a caretaker role.

The decision by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri on Wednesday to call for a plenary session to extend parliament's mandate Friday followed an agreement between most political factions that the worsening security situation has made campaigning and voting impossible, and that postponing it may ease soaring tensions.

Parliament's current term ends June 20.

"The reason for the extension is the current security situation, which does not allow the polls to be held not only in some areas, but also it does not allow freedom of movement for candidates and voters in more than one area," Berri told The Daily Star newspaper Wednesday.

On Tuesday, three Lebanese soldiers were killed in a drive-by shooting on a checkpoint near the Syrian border in the second attack targeting the army this year. Moreover, the overt involvement of Hezbollah fighters in the war in Syria alongside Assad's forces has further raised sectarian tensions. Most of the rebels fighting Assad are Sunnis, and many Lebanese Sunni fighters have also joined the fight.

Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, in a weekend speech, urged the Lebanese to keep the fight restricted to Syria.

"We can fight each other there, but keep Lebanon out of the fray," he said. His opponents accused him of involving Lebanon in the fight.

The increasing violence has raised fears that Lebanon would slide into civil war, and the decision to extend parliament's mandate brought back memories of that conflict.

Although presidents continued to be elected during the 1975-90 war, Lebanon had the same parliament from 1972 until 1992 ? two years after the civil war ended.

The decision to delay the parliamentary election was received mostly with apathy on the street, where most people are angry over worsening security and economic conditions and don't expect much from lawmakers anyway.

"What do I care if they hold elections or not?" asked Ibrahim Matar, a retired civil servant. "A new parliament won't bring me electricity, food or security. Better not waste our time with such meaningless things."

Others warned that the move could hurt Lebanon's reputation as a country known for regular, relatively free elections.

"Some countries have Arab Spring revolutions to achieve democracy, while in Lebanon we are willingly throwing our democracy aside and taking up guns instead. That's absolutely tragic," said Hani Mortada, a clothing shop owner and father of two.

Most hope the extension will help maintain a semblance of peace until a solution to the Syrian crisis is reached.

Beirut-based political analyst Rami Khouri said it was unlikely that Lebanon's own sectarian conflict will be reignited.

"The differences over Syria will continue to play out in Lebanon, both in the political debate and in armed clashes, but the civil war will remain in Syria," said Khouri, director of the Issam Fares Institute of Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut.

Apes are emotional about choices

One chimp, named Timi, reacted to losing a gambling game with what looked very much like a tantrum

Like many humans, chimpanzees and bonobos react quite emotionally when they take risks that fail to pay off.

This is according to researchers from Duke University in the US, who developed decision-making games that the apes played to earn edible treats.

Some animals that lost the game - receiving a bland piece of cucumber rather than a preferred piece of banana - reacted with what looked like the ape equivalent of a tantrum.

The findings are published in Plos One.

The researchers worked with 23 chimps and 15 bonobos in two ape sanctuaries in the Republic of Congo.

"The animals were all [rescued] orphans of the bushmeat trade," explained lead researcher Alexandra Rosati, now at Yale University.

Some of the reactions look similar to a kid [shouting] 'no, I wanted it!?

End Quote Alexandra Rosati Yale University

"They're sort of in semi-captivity, but it's possible to play games with them.

"It's as close as we can come to wild animals without actually being in the wild."

Dr Rosati, who studies problem-solving in apes in order to examine the origins of human behaviour, designed two games.

In the first, the animals could choose between receiving a relatively small food reward immediately, or receiving a larger reward but having to wait for it.

The second game involved choosing between a "safe" and a "risky" option. The safe option was six peanuts hidden under a bowl. But a second bowl concealed either a slice of cucumber or a highly favoured portion of banana.

Many of the apes - both bonobos and chimps - became emotional when they had to wait or took a gamble that did not pay off.

The researchers recorded some very tantrum-like responses: vocalisations including "pout moans" and "screams", as well as anxious scratching and banging on the bars of the enclosure.

"Some of the reactions look similar to a kid [shouting] 'no, I wanted it!'," said Dr Rosati.

Emotional decisions

The results, Dr Rosati explained, suggest that the emotional component of decision-making - feelings of frustration and regret that are so fundamental to our own decisions - are intrinsic to ape society and are not uniquely human.

The researchers also found differences in the way the two species responded to the games; chimps were more willing to take risks, and also more patient than bonobos.

This could suggest that the apes' capacity for emotion may have helped shape the way they live.

"These differences might be reflected in differences in how the apes choose to forage in the wild," said Dr Rosati.

"This might be why chimpanzees are more likely to engage in risky strategies like hunting, in that you could spend all day pursuing a monkey, but end up with nothing.

Overall, she said that the results suggested that decision-making in apes involved moods and motivations similar to our own.

'Ultraselective' process to make valuable chemical from biomass

May 28, 2013 ? Chemical engineering researchers Wei Fan, Paul Dauenhauer and colleagues at the University of Massachusetts Amherst report this week that they've discovered a new chemical process to make p-xylene, an important ingredient of common plastics, at 90 percent yield from lignocellulosic biomass, the highest yield achieved to date. Details are in the current issue of Green Chemistry.

As Dauenhauer explains, the chemical industry currently produces p-xylene from more expensive petroleum, while the new process will make the same chemical from lower-cost, renewable biomass. He and colleagues call the process "ultraselective" because of its ability to achieve 90 percent selectivity for the desired product. "The biomass-derived p-xylene can be mixed with petroleum-based plastics, and consumers will not be able to tell the difference. But manufacturers and chemical companies will be able to operate more sustainably and at lower cost in the future because of this discovery," he adds.

Consumers already know the plastics made from this new process by the triangular recycling label "#1" on plastic containers. Xylene chemicals are used to produce a plastic called PET (polyethylene terephthalate), which is currently used in many products including soda bottles, food packaging, synthetic fibers for clothing and even automotive parts, Dauenhauer says.

The UMass Amherst team's discovery reveals the impact of nano-structured catalyst design on renewable chemical processes. Led by Fan, they examined a large number of nano-porous catalytic materials, including zeolites, investigating their capability for producing p-xylene. A specific material identified as 'zeolite beta' was found to be optimal. "We discovered that the performance of the biomass reaction was strongly affected by the nanostructure of the catalyst, which we were able to engineer and achieve 90 percent yield," Fan says.

Besides Dauenhauer and Fan, the research team includes Chun-Chih Chang, Sara Green and C. Luke Williams, doctoral students in chemical engineering at UMass Amherst.

(AP) ? Sam Stosur waited 2? hours to play because of rain, then quickly won her opening match at the French Open.

The 2010 runner-up swept the first nine games Tuesday and drubbed 42-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-0, 6-2.

Play was delayed at the start on a 55-degree afternoon, and when the rain stopped, Stosur was ready. Playing on cozy Court 1, nicknamed the bullring, Stosur dominated with her strong serve and pinpoint groundstrokes, repeatedly skipping shots just inside the lines.

Shortly after Stosur finished, rain returned, prompting another delay.

"I was happy to get out there and start," she said. "It was spitting a little bit when we went out there. You think, 'Oh, are we going to start or are we not?' Lucky for me I was able to finish the match before this last downpour came."

The resulting schedule backlog meant at least a handful of players won't begin first-round matches until at least Wednesday, three days after some opening matches were completed. Among those hoping to take the court were the champions from the Australian Open in January, No. 1-seeded Novak Djokovic and No. 3 Victoria Azarenka.

Stosur, seeded No. 9, enjoyed a career breakthrough three years ago when she reached the Roland Garros final before losing to Francesca Schiavone. She won the U.S. Open in 2011, but this year has been hampered by a right calf injury and has yet to reach a semifinal.

Stosur said she's now feeling 100 percent and hoping for a good run in Paris.

"The first hurdle is done, but there are many, many more ahead of me," she said. "I have to stay on track, but I think this was a very good start."

Date-Krumm, who won the Strasbourg doubles title last week, is the third-oldest woman to play in the French Open. When she made her Roland Garros debut in 1989, nearly half the players in this year's women's draw had not yet been born.

She said she didn't play any singles matches on clay leading up to Roland Garros because the surface is her weakest, and while she had low expectations against Stosur, she felt she played better toward the finish.

"I enjoy it a little bit in the end of the second set," she said. "My tennis, it was not so bad. Stosur is so strong, and she's specialist on the clay. ... I'm already focused on the grass court season."

Qualifier Mariana Duque-Marino beat Kristyna Pliskova 6-2, 6-0. In men's play, No. 26 Grigor Dimitrov advanced when Alejandro Falla retired with indigestion trailing 6-4, 1-0.

After 90 minutes of play, the rain returned. Soggy fans huddled in corridors and formed long lines at the gourmet coffee, hot dog and waffle stands.

Last week, tournament officials said they would move ahead with plans to build a retractable roof over center court, despite a judicial ruling in March that put the project on hold. The roof would be completed in 2018 as part of a $440 million renovation project at Roland Garros.

The men's final last year between Djokovic and Rafael Nadal was halted because of rain in the fourth set, forcing an overnight suspension and the completion of the tournament on a Monday. It was the first time in 39 years the French Open didn't finish on time.

Build a Portable Android-based Raspberry Pi Station

May 28, 2013 GMT

Dmitri Popov

Transforming a bare-bones Raspberry Pi into a fully-functional portable station is a popular pastime among enterprising users, and you can easily find instructions on how to build a Kindleberry Pi, a Kindleberry Wireless, and even a Raspberry Pi Linux laptop. But if you happen to use an Android device, you can opt for a less complicated and more modular solution devised by yours truly.

The Android device in this setup acts both as a wireless hotspot and a display for Raspberry Pi. The latter is configured to automatically connect to the Wi-Fi network created by the Android device. And an SSH client app (e.g., VX ConnectBot) running on the Android device is used to access Raspberry Pi via an SSH connection. Here is what you need for this project:

  • Android device with wireless hotspot functionality
  • An SSH client app like VX ConnectBox installed on the Android device
  • OTG (On-The-Go) micro-USB cable (not required for use with a Bluetooth keyboard)
  • Wireless mini keyboard with integrated touchpad like the one from Rii
  • Wi-Fi USB dongle known to work with Raspberry Pi (e.g., Edimax EW-7811Un)
  • Optional external battery pack for powering Raspbery Pi

Start with connecting the keyboard to the Android device using the OTG micro-USB cable. Alternatively, you can use a Bluetooth keyboard which eliminates the need for the cable and makes the entire setup even more elegant. Enable then the wireless hotspot feature. Configure Raspberry Pi to automatically connect to the wireless hotspot. You can do this using the graphical network configuration utility supplied with the Raspbian Linux distribution, or by editing network configuration files by hand. Once you've done that, Raspberry Pi should automatically connect to the wireless hotspot on every boot. On the Android device, find out Raspberry Pi's IP address, then use the SSH client app to establish an SSH connection to it. That's all there is to it. It's also possible to install a VNC server on Raspberry Pi and access its graphical desktop environment using a VNC client on the Android device.

Social Media Advertising Set To Explode - Business Insider

It's not difficult to understand the lure of social media advertising.

Social networks like Facebook and Twitter are daily destinations for millions of consumers. Increasingly, their ad products offer targeting according to specific demographics, social connections, interests, and habits.?

As brands look across a fractured media landscape, where few digital properties offer any scale, social networks offer them an interesting proposition.?

In a new report?from?BI?Intelligence,?we analyze the state of social media advertising and where it is heading, offering a comprehensive guide and examination of?the advertising ecosystems on?Facebook and Twitter, offer a?primer on Tumblr as an emerging ad medium, and detail how mobile is an important part of this story as mobile-friendly as?native ad formats?fuel growth in the market.

Here's an overview of some major players in the mobile advertising ecosystem:

  • Social media advertising offers a potentially unique advertising opportunity massive:?As brands look across a fractured media landscape, social networks offer them an interesting proposition. Social networks have scale - ?enormous user bases and deep databases. And they have high engagement and desirable demographics - Americans were spending an average of 12 hours per month on social networks as of July 2012, with 18-24 year olds averaging 20 hours.?
  • Even conservative estimates predict huge growth:?BIA/Kelsey recently came out with a study that offers one view -?forecasting $11 billion of social ad spend in 2017, up from $4.7 billion last year.?Social media advertising is a young and growing market and, so far, it only represents 1% to 10% of ad budgets for a wide majority of advertisers. There's significant opportunity for that share to grow.??
  • Increased mobile usage will be a huge growth driver: Both Twitter and Facebook have passed the 50% mobile usage mark and,?given the continued growth of mobile devices, it will only rise.?Mobile accounted for 11% of Facebook's ad revenue last year even though it didn't release mobile ads until the tail end of the second quarter. By the fourth quarter, it was up to 23%. And now, Twitter is reporting that its mobile ad revenue now regularly outpaces its desktop ad revenue.
  • As in-stream advertising, easily transferable across devices, drive the change:?According to social ad optimization platform TBG, Facebook's mobile ads have the highest click-through rates by a substantial margin.?Furthermore, native in-stream ads are perfectly transferable across devices, whereas display ads can have issues on a smaller screen.?The BIA/Kelsey prediction calls for mobile to account for only $2.2 billion of that in 2017 - a 20% market share.?It seems highly unlikely that mobile will account for only 20% of the social ad market come 2017, especially as usage habits continue to change.

"We will install a temporary span on the bridge that will restore traffic while we build a safe and durable permanent span adjacent to it," Gov. Jay Inslee said in a statement Sunday. That permanent replacement should be ready by early autumn.

That?s good news for commuters and travelers along this busy highway through the Pacific Northwest into Canada now poking their way along other river crossings. But it?s also a reminder that many older bridges around the country are at risk, in serious need of repair or replacement.

?Thousands of bridges around the US may be one freak accident or mistake away from collapse, even if the spans are deemed structurally sound,? reports the Associated Press.

?The crossings are kept standing by engineering design, not supported with brute strength or redundant protections like their more modern counterparts,? the AP reports. ?Bridge regulators call the more risky spans ?fracture critical,? meaning that if a single, vital component of the bridge is compromised, it can crumple.?

Which is exactly what happened when a tractor-trailer carrying a legal oversized load clipped a girder on the I-5 bridge, sending one span and two vehicles plunging into the river below. No one was killed or seriously injured, and the truck driver (who made it across the bridge and immediately stopped) has not been charged.

Vulnerable bridges carry millions of passengers a day. Some examples: In Boston, a six-lane highway near Logan airport includes a "fracture critical" bridge over Bennington Street. In northern Chicago, an I-90 pass that goes over Ashland Avenue is in the same category. An I-880 bridge over 5th Avenue in Oakland, Calif., is also on the list.

There are 66,749 ?structurally deficient? bridges and 84,748 ?functionally obsolete? bridges in the United States, according to the Federal Highway Administration ? about one-fourth of the 607,000 total bridges nationally.

"Since 1989, we've had nearly 600 bridge failures in this country,? Barry LePatner, author of "Too Big to Fall: America's Failing Infrastructure and the Way Forward," told CBS News last August. ?While they're not widely publicized ? a large number of bridges in every state are really a danger to the traveling public."

The Huffington Post notes that in his State of the Union address this year, President Obama?urged repairs?of "the nearly 70,000 structurally deficient bridges across the country." He proposed a plan called?"Fix it First.?

?Investing in infrastructure not only makes our roads, bridges, and ports safer and allows our businesses and workers to be as competitive as they need to be in the global economy, it also creates thousands of good American jobs that cannot be outsourced,? states a White House fact sheet announcing Obama?s infrastructure program. ?The President?s plan will immediately invest $50 billion in our nation?s transportation infrastructure, with $40 billion targeted to the most urgent upgrades and focused on fixing our highways, bridges, transit systems, and airports most in need of repair.?

Instead, Congress failed to avoid the sequester and transportation repair spending?faces a $1.9 billion cut.

Chinese premier promises reforms

BERLIN (AP) ? New Chinese Premier Li Keqiang says his government wants to attract foreign companies and is willing to undertake reforms to promote investment.

Speaking Monday after meeting Economy Minister Philipp Roesler, Li said foreign companies needed to be able to expect fair competition and protection for their patents and copyrights.

The dpa news agency reports Li said: "China will not deviate from promoting reforms and opening to the outside."

Chancellor Angela Merkel vowed after meeting Li Sunday that Germany would work to avoid a trade war by using its economic clout to block the European Union from imposing punitive tariffs on Chinese products like solar panels.

Merkel spokesman Steffen Seibert says the chancellor also discussed human rights and artistic freedom with Li. He gave no details of Li's response.

Obama flies to Oklahoma to console tornado victims

MOORE, Okla. (AP) ? President Barack Obama flew to tornado-stricken Oklahoma Sunday to offer both moral and monetary support to a community facing an enormous reconstruction challenge while still reeling from the loss of lives, property and neighborhoods.

The White House said Obama wanted a firsthand look at recovery from the monstrous EF5 tornado that barreled through last Monday afternoon. The president was visiting with affected families and thanking first responders in the devastated town of Moore, about 10 miles from Oklahoma City.

Obama's motorcade passed past grassy fields strewn with scattered debris. He saw devastation so awesome that it appeared as if garbage had literally rained from the sky. The president's first stop was the demolished site of the Plaza Towers Elementary School, where seven students were killed when the tornado turned the one-story building into a heap of bricks, broken concrete and twisted metal.

Obama flew from Washington into Tinker Air Force Base and shook hands with personnel whose homes off base were lost or damaged. Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, the first to greet the president as he got off the plane, said Sunday that her message to Obama is that she appreciates the visit, but the state also needs quick action from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help the ravaged town of 41,000 people.

The Republican governor said so far, the agency has done a great job of speeding relief and cash assistance to affected families, but she's concerned about the long run.

"There's going to come a time when there's going to be a tremendous amount of need once we begin the debris clearing, which we already have, but really get it cleared off to where we need to start rebuilding these homes, rebuilding these businesses," she said on CBS' "Face the Nation." ''And we know at different times in the past, money hasn't come always as quickly as it should."

Obama offered prayers for residents from the White House in recent days and has promised to support the rebuilding for as long as it takes. "They have suffered mightily this week," Obama said Wednesday. "And while the road ahead will be long, their country will be with them every single step of the way."

White House spokesman Josh Earnest, speaking to reporters accompanying the presidential party on Air Force One, said Obama wanted to make the trip to offer condolences and reiterate his and the nation's commitment to rebuild.

"This is the greatest nation on Earth, and we're going to dedicate this nation's time, attention, resources and expertise to help our people in their time of urgent crisis," the spokesman said.

Earnest touted the federal contributions so far, including Obama's signing of a disaster declaration within hours of the storm to speed aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Earnest said that 450 FEMA personnel were working on the ground in Oklahoma and have delivered 43,000 meals, 150,000 liters of water and thousands of cots, blankets and tarps. He said 4,200 people have applied for disaster assistance, and $3.4 million in payments have been approved.

Fallin said the money is particularly vital for the victims. "A lot of people lose their checkbooks, they lose their credit cards, they lose their driver's license, their birth certificates, their insurance papers, they lose everything, and they have no cash. And some of the banks were even hit, the ATM machines, so people need cash to get immediate needs," she said on CBS.

Earnest also said that forecasters from the National Weather Service had worked ahead of the storm to prepare communities that it threatened. He said they issued a warning 36 minutes before the tornado entered Moore, earlier than the 12-minute average warning. Twenty-four people perished in the tornado, including 10 children.

"These advancements, made by government scientists in the field of weather forecasting at these agencies are dramatic and they're saving lives," Earnest said. He said Sunday wasn't a day for a partisan political debate, adding that "it is evident to any impartial observer here what an important role the federal government can play in providing assistance to our people at their time of urgent need."

Among the tornado victims were 10 children, including two sisters pulled by the strong winds out of their mother's grasp, an infant who died along with his mother trying to ride out the storm in a convenience store and seven students at Plaza Towers. Many students were pulled from the rubble after the school was destroyed.

Fallin noted that some 100 other schools in Oklahoma have safe rooms for children to seek shelter in tornados.

"Schools that have been lost in the past, many of them have rebuilt rooms of some sort as a safe room in their school, and we're certainly going to encourage that," she said.

"Any death is very unfortunate, but it's truly incredible that we had only 24 deaths at this site, because if you look at all the debris field and how wide it is, I don't know how anybody survived this tornado," she said on CBS.

The White House said that FEMA has already provided $57 million in rebates and incentives to help build about 12,000 storm shelters in Oklahoma. "These storm shelters can be the difference between life and death," Earnest said.

French soldier stabbed in throat outside Paris

PARIS (AP) ? A French soldier was stabbed in the throat in a busy commercial district outside Paris on Saturday, and France's president said authorities are investigating any possible links with the recent slaying of a British soldier.

President Francois Hollande said the identity of the attacker was unknown and cautioned against jumping to conclusions about the assault on the uniformed soldier in the La Defense shopping area. The life of the 23-year-old soldier was not in danger, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The stabbing follows the slaying Wednesday of a British soldier, who was brutally stabbed on a London street in broad daylight in a suspected terrorist attack that has raised fears of potential copycat strikes.

"There could be a link, but we will look at all the elements," Hollande said during a news conference in Ethiopia, where he was traveling.

The British soldier, 25-year-old Lee Rigby, was attacked while walking outside the Royal Artillery Barracks in the Woolwich area of south London.

The gruesome scene was recorded on witnesses' cellphones, and a video has emerged in which one of the two suspects ? his hands bloodied ? boasted of their exploits and warned of more violence as the soldier lay on the ground. Holding bloody knives and a meat cleaver, the suspects waited for the arrival of police, who shot them in the legs, according to witnesses.

In the video, one of the suspects declared, "We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you ... We must fight them as they fight us."

Two Muslim hard-liners have identified that suspect as Michael Adebolajo, a Christian who converted to Islam and attended several London demonstrations organized by banned British radical group al-Muhajiroun.

French security forces have been on heightened alert since their country launched a military intervention in the African nation of Mali in January to regain territory seized by Islamic radicals.

Good, glorious food! | Janet's Notebook

We?re due to visit a friend?in another part of the country.

Weeks before our departure, my friend showed signs of a panic attack. She sent me emails, asking: ?What would you like to eat? What do you not eat?? ?Are you a vegetarian??

After reading my posts about dogs, she finally had a meltdown. She revealed, ?I do have 2 dogs you know.?

Welcome to the British hospitality.

I don?t like my guests to be difficult, and so I wouldn?t like to become one myself. Be grateful. Don?t ask people to prepare what you want to eat. Behave like a pig: eat what you?re given. It?s the excitement about travelling: being a bit different from your normal life.?I always tell my son that unless it?s medically necessary ? such as if you have a nut allergy or if you have?coeliac disease or if you?re diabetic, you shouldn?t be a difficult person when it comes to food. However, he doesn?t seem to understand this message sometimes. He and his father still refuse to eat some of the Chinese delicacies that I eat, like chicken feet.

Many years ago, I invited two Chinese friends for dinner. I knew they were very religious. They lived in a commune in London and they were vegetarian. Understanding that they were vegetarian, I spent the whole afternoon boiling some lovely vegetable soup for them, adding ginger, garlic, herb and spring onion to enhance its flavours. However, they arrived with bags of food, mainly tofu, in many shapes. They refused to drink my soup. I did wonder, why did they prepare animal-shaped tofu bites? If you are a genuine vegetarian, surely you shouldn?t even show any desire for animals?

They explained that they always brought their own food when they visited friends. They belonged to a specific sect of an oriental religion from Korea. They are more than vegetarian. They are not allowed any ingredients which are linked with desires, such as ginger, garlic, chilli and spring onions.

Though I respected their choices, I must admit I felt rather annoyed. You can tell that I?m?not a purist. I?m very prepared to sell my soul to the devil in exchange for ginger and hot chilli.

Food is an emotive subject. My 80-year-old mum had been through hunger in her life, therefore, she could never comprehend why today?s people would refuse meat. For her and the older generation, it?s illogical to refuse meat, as eating meat would make you fat, and being fat is a sign of fortune and good health.

At home, we eat rather well. My husband, the mathematician, loves cooking, especially when he?s stuck with maths problems and needs to find an outlet. The problem is, when a mathematician cooks, he is scientific and he would keep asking your opinions afterwards. You can?t give a simple comment as ?Lovely! I really enjoyed that.? You have to comment on the texture, combination of herbs used, intensity of flavour, thickness of sauce, ?and even the presentation of food.

And, the mathematician will need all utensils and pans from the cupboard because, apparently, each tool has a different purpose.

According to the man, a saucepan is for cooking liquid, a frying pan is for dry cooking, a saut? pan is for cooking with a thin layer of liquid. When I cook, a simple wok will be enough to conquer the world.

chicken dish

For example, yesterday he cooked this chicken dish. The ingredients included tarragon, parsley, Cr?me Fra?che (you can?t just call it sour cream. You have to call it Cr?me Fra?che.) And he even added wedges of lime on top for decoration.

IMG_7331

He also cooked this pasta dish, mixed with extra-virgin olive oil, sun-dried tomatoes and pine nuts. Though the food was beautifully presented, my son didn?t appreciate the nuances. He removed the lime, visible tarragon, parsley,?pine nuts and sun-dried tomatoes from his plate.

Food

Sometimes I thought, what?s the fuss of all the fancy cooking? When I cook, it?s because I have to, out of necessity. When the man cooks, it?s because he wants to create something, to have fun, and to use up all the pans.

When I visit my friend, I?m sure she will do her best to feed me well.

A Working Apple I Computer Just Sold For $671,400 at Auction

The Apple 1 is a little piece of history, the first in a lineage that's taken the world by storm since its birth in 1976. And that piece of history is worth a lot. An anonymous collector just picked up a still functioning(!) one of the suckers at auction for a cool $671,400. And you thought gaming PCs were expensive.

The recent sale?which just closed today?beats out a record of $640,000 that was set in the same Cologne, Germany auction house just last year, and a record of $374,500 just a few months before that; these have got to be some of the few electronics that are going up in value as they age.

Not much is known about the purchaser except that he/she is "a wealthy entrepreneur from the Far East" according to the New York Times. I'll bet you wish you had that much cash to throw down on a seriously antiquated piece of hardware. And though it might be a bit of an increase over the machines initial $666.66 launch-price (some $2,700 in current-day dollars), it's priceless in its own way. But most of us would probably just be better off with an iPad. [The New York Times]

Update: According to the Associated Press the price was $668,000. Either way, a whole hell of a lot.

The Simplest Flashlight Is Just a Rolled Up Piece of Paper

A flashlight is a crucial thing to have around the house, but even though it can be super useful, it's probably plastic and/or filled with DD batteries. Not exactly elegant. The Paper LED Torch Light on the other hand, is the picture of simplicity.

Designed by Kazuhiro Yamanaka, the Paper LED Torch Light is as simple as it seems. There's a single LED mounted on the inside, and when the paper is curved into a tube, two hidden switches turn it on. When the paper lies flat again, it goes off. It's not the first paper-light design we've ever seen, but it's definitely the most wonderfully simple.

As neat as it is, the Paper LED Torch Light doesn't seem to be on sale anywhere. But let's face facts; it probably wouldn't be a very good flashlight. Still, it's a pretty neat trick. And if you ever needed a flashlight that could hide, you'd be hard-pressed to find something better. [Designboom]

'Idol' fans argue over winner, stab each other

Candice Glover, left, won "American Idol" over Kree Harrison.

Two "American Idol" fans in York, Penn., took a heated debate over season 12's top two to extremes when their argument ended in multiple stab wounds.

Karen Elaine Harrelson, 48, and Gregory L. Stambaugh, 57, were watching the "Idol" finale in the basement of Stambaugh's West Manchester Township home on Wednesday, May 15, when they got into a drunken argument over which finalist -- Candice Glover or Kree Harrison -- should win the title.

Photos from THR: 'Idol' finalists' hometown visits

The fight escalated as Harrelson allegedly went into the kitchen to fetch a knife and the two proceeded to stab the other. According to a report in the York Dispatch, the knife exchanged hands at some point, but neither party remembers who stabbed whom first.

Both were treated at York Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and charged with two counts of simple assault and one count of aggravated assault, according to online court documents.

Story from THR: A day in the life of 'Idol's' musical director

Stambaugh told police that Harrelson went upstairs to the kitchen, got a knife, returned to the basement and stabbed him. He said she then went back to the main floor and Stambaugh followed her and got the knife away from her. In her version, Harrelson claims she got the knife to cut a ?piece of cake,? but Stambaugh grabbed a ?second knife? to cut her wrist.

Both are still in jail.

Hands-on with Maxwest's $65 7-inch dual-core ICS tablet at CTIA 2013

Handson with Maxwest's $65 7inch dualcore ICS tablet at CTIA 2013

It's true that cheap affordable Android tablets are a dime a dozen at most trade shows these days, but here at CTIA 2013 we stumbled upon something that caught our eye -- a 7-inch dual-core tablet running Ice Cream Sandwich that costs just $65. The Maxwest TAB-7155DC aka. Ippo Y88 measures 182 x 122 x 10mm (7.16 x 4.8 x 0.39inch), weighs 187g (6.6oz) and comes in several hues (black, white, silver, red, blue and pink).

It features a 7-inch 1024 x 600-pixel capacitive multitouch LCD, an Infotmic IMAPx820 SoC (1GHz dual-core Cortex A5 CPU with Mali 400 GPU), 512MB of RAM, 4GB of built-in storage, dual VGA cameras (front and back), WiFi b/g/n and 2800mAh battery. The screen isn't covered in glass and there's no sign of any Bluetooth or GPS radios, but then again, what do you expect for $65? You''ll find a power / lock key, DC socket, micro-USB port (with on-the-go support) and mini-HDMI output on the top edge, plus a 3.5mm headphone jack, volume rocker and microSD card slot on the right side. A microphone and speaker round things up in back.

The tablet runs a mostly stock version of ICS (Android 4.1.1, to be specific) and includes the usual assortment of Google apps along with access to the Play Store. Performance is adequate -- not buttery smooth but perfectly usable. Build quality and materials are surprisingly decent for the price (the plastic is color-though), but the display leaves a lot to be desired (viewing angle are poor and the acrylic covering the screen is scratch-prone). Then again, it's only $65, right? Check out the gallery below for our rose-colored hands-on with the expensive tablet.
