Panasonic plans to go forth with Android to all of Europe this spring, North America is a definite maybe

Have you been hoping to experience a Panasonic boom up close and personal, but found yourself in the wrong locale? The Japanese electronics giant wants to change all of that by expanding its Android lineup to Europe and North America, according to Nikkei. The company's said to be in talks with a "major telecommunications firm" in Europe to bring several devices to the continent as early as this spring, and is aspiring to eventually make it to North America and other Asian countries. This lines up with last week's rumors that it was seeking out a PR agency to help spread the news when the time's right. Might we expect Panasonic to make a mobile splash at CES or MWC in a major way? It's going to be exhibiting at both, so we'd say there's a pretty good chance.

NY Times Editorial: Legal Education Reform

New York Times editorial, Legal Education Reform (comments here):

American legal education is in crisis. The economic downturn has left many recent law graduates saddled with crushing student loans and bleak job prospects. The law schools have been targets of lawsuits by students and scrutiny from the United States Senate for alleged false advertising about potential jobs. Yet, at the same time, more and more Americans find that they cannot afford any kind of legal help.

Addressing these issues requires changing legal education and how the profession sees its responsibility to serve the public interest as well as clients. Some schools are moving in promising directions. The majority are still stuck in an outdated instructional and business model. ...

Instead of a curriculum taught largely through professors? grilling of students about appellate cases, some schools are offering more apprentice-style learning in legal clinics and more courses that train students for their multiple future roles as advocates and counselors, negotiators and deal-shapers, and problem-solvers. ...

In American law schools, the choice is not between teaching legal theory or practice; the task is to teach useful legal ideas and skills in more effective ways. The case method has been the foundation of legal education for 140 years. Its premise was that students would learn legal reasoning by studying appellate rulings. That approach treated law as a form of science and as a source of truth.

That vision was dated by the 1920s. It was a relic by the 1960s. Law is now regarded as a means rather than an end, a tool for solving problems. In reforming themselves, law schools have the chance to help reinvigorate the legal profession and rebuild public confidence in what lawyers can provide.

India urges action against Mumbai attackers (AP)

NEW DELHI ? India urged Pakistan on Saturday to take strong action against the perpetrators of the Mumbai terror attack that killed 166 people three years ago.

India is waiting for Pakistan to act decisively after providing it with evidence on alleged perpetrators who are living in Pakistan, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said.

Three years ago on Saturday, 10 Pakistan-based gunmen laid siege to India's financial hub, killing 166 people.

"No cause can justify the use of terrorism for attainment of goals," Krishna said.

India and Pakistan have recently resumed peace talks that were suspended after the attack.

India maintains that Pakistani intelligence officials helped plan the attack and that Pakistan has not done enough to crack down on those behind it.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? Montee Ball scored four more touchdowns in his pursuit of an NCAA record, powering No. 15 Wisconsin to a 45-7 rout of No. 20 Penn State and a spot in next week's Big Ten championship game.

Ball has scored 34 touchdowns this season for the Badgers (10-2, 6-2 Big Ten), the second-most in a single season in NCAA history. Barry Sanders holds the record, scoring 39 for Oklahoma State in 11 games in the 1988 season.

With the win, Wisconsin will play Big Ten Legends division winner Michigan State in Indianapolis next Saturday.

The Nittany Lions (9-3, 6-2) came into the game hoping to salvage something from a season dwarfed by scandal. They took an early 7-0 lead but quickly unraveled, falling behind 28-7 by halftime.

The Nittany Lions came into Saturday's game still reeling in the wake of child sex abuse charges against former Nittany Lions assistant Jerry Sandusky, which led to turmoil on campus and the end of coach Joe Paterno's reign at the school.

Although anything that happens on a football field pales in comparison to the allegations against Sandusky, Nittany Lions players caught in the middle of it all still hoped to rally the team for a shot at the Rose Bowl. They won at Ohio State last week, giving them a chance going into Saturday's game.

But after taking an early lead, the Nittany Lions just gave too many chances to the Badgers' high-octane offense led by Ball and quarterback Russell Wilson.

Wisconsin was again without starting center Peter Konz, but it didn't seem to matter. Wilson threw for 186 yards and two touchdowns, flustering the Nittany Lions' defense by slipping away from tackling attempts all afternoon.

Wilson has thrown a touchdown pass in 36 straight games, tying the NCAA record held by former Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell ? who is now a backup for the Green Bay Packers.

The Nittany Lions started strong, though, taking an early 7-0 lead on a pair of big mistakes by the Badgers.

Wisconsin had Penn State stopped, but a Wisconsin player ran into Nittany Lions punter Anthony Fera to give up a first down on a penalty. Four plays later, Matt McGloin found Curtis Drake wide open ? no Badgers defensive back was within 10 yards ? near the end zone for a 44-yard touchdown.

The Badgers answered with a heavy dose of Ball on a 10-play, 76-yard drive that ended with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to Jared Abbrederis.

McGloin then threw an interception to Wisconsin safety Shelton Johnson, giving the ball back to the Badgers near midfield. Wilson marched Wisconsin into the red zone, Ball scored a 1-yard touchdown and Wisconsin took a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter.

Wilson then left Nittany Lions defenders grasping at air on a drive late in the second quarter. With the Badgers facing third-and-7, Wilson slipped away from pressure and ran for a first down. Later in the drive, Wilson broke at least three tackles on a 19-yard scramble to give Wisconsin first-and-goal at the 5. Ball scored a 2-yard touchdown two plays later, and Wisconsin took a 21-7 lead.

Penn State then fumbled a kickoff and Wilson drove the Badgers again, finishing with a 4-yard touchdown to Nick Toon.

Toon was wearing jersey No. 87 in tribute to his father, former Badgers and New York Jets wide receiver Al Toon.

Penn State running back Silas Redd fumbled early in the third quarter and the Badgers recovered near midfield. Wilson marched the Badgers into the red zone, Ball scored his third touchdown of the day from 9 yards out and Wisconsin led 35-7.

Ball added an 18-yard touchdown late in the third quarter and ended the day with 156 yards on 25 carries

Abusing Police Authority?.In the Name of Love!!!??

roleplay/the-perfect-excuse-the-law/

Hopefully the first in a series I call 'The Perfect Excuse' where a couple is formed due to the authority, profession, etc of one of the 'lovers' in order to take advantage of their newfound partner, trying to coax the other into loving them back. Endings will generally be happy?unless we feel like chaning things up. XD

But now, onto the official plot for this one:

-

Image

Meet the Lady Cop

She's a hardworking member of the British Police Force, operating in London. She enjoys wearing only the finest and most expensive, proper clothing fresh off the latest fashions, eating fine cuisine she cooks herself, sharing the bed with a big strong man, and doing anything in her power to please him. She's a hardworking member of the British Police Force, operating in London. She enjoys wearing only the finest (and tight fitting) clothing fresh off the latest fashions, eating fine cuisine she cooks herself, sharing the bed with a big strong man, and doing anything in her power to please him. Flowers are her favori

Yeah, No. She's a Lazy, Lonely officer who enjoys average clothing that gets her called a skank, including her uniform, and gets assigned to simple desk work and morning traffic (especially when at its worst) and only gets sent out on minor calls such as cats in a tree (Due to the fact this lady cop was a former gymnast before being discovered to have been cheating on her mother's strict diet), handling flashers, crazies carrying katanas, bananas, or even?eh, I can't say this last one, and speaking at elementary schools. She has a secret arsenal of guns to appease her love of weapons and drinks 20% of all beer consumed in the area, and is a regular to the adult video/toy store, a practice she prefers to keep quiet about.

Image

She has had a rather?'Dry' Love Life, which her mother constantly bugs her about (She wants grandkids already). If she mentioned dating a guy, they probably only wet on one date before they either left, or ran for it after she tried to get kinky, leading to a large hunger she seems to try and fill by eating cheap snacks and sweets, leading to her nickname at the station regarding her bum, 'Muffin Cheeks' (She LOVES Muffins). She has a kind of 'signal' she likes someone, when she giggles and goes 'UshiUshiUshi~!!" which actually scares off people, along with a most creepy smile:

Image

Mornings for her include checking to see if she had yet ANOTHER wet dream, if 'her bra size changed' or most importantly: Is there a guy sleeping on the side?

Meet the Criminal (JayZeroSnake)

He's from Italy. He was originally a Wheelman for the Mafia until he was given his first job as a hitman in London. Naturally he wasn't prepared to take a life, just to drive fast (Still has a good shot on the shooting range though) and was taken in by the police.

Like the Lady cop, he's kind of a slacker. He plays tons of video games, is usually hanging around on the internet, and gets all the shitty jobs, despite decent pay for a mafia boy.

The Lady Cop's Life turns around when she's told to watch over him because he promised to testify in court. At first she was about to say no, but instead, she took one good look, and said yes?

?Then proceeded to buy some new lingerie, and take a spare pair of handcuffs, and took him to her own home, despite being given specific orders to take him to a hotel on the outskirts of town. Now, she's messing with his head, sharing a bed with him, and trying to straight up play to his inner pervert. What? she finds him hot. And her only current chance at romance. Plus, he's not crazy. And hasn't killed anybody. mom wouldn't mind as long as she got her grandkids.

The two must learn to live together, and with eachother's quirks?maybe they really can fall in love??

Iceland rejects Chinese bid for resort land (AP)

REYKJAVIK, Iceland ? A Chinese entrepreneur's bid to create a vast nature retreat in Iceland was turned down by the north Atlantic island nation's government Friday, amid concern the deal would have handed a major chunk of territory to a foreign investor.

Iceland's interior ministry said it had rejected an application by the Zyongkun Group, a company controlled by Huang Nubo, a 55-year-old former Chinese government official, in part because no foreign buyer had ever bought so much land in the country.

Huang, one of China's wealthiest entrepreneurs, had sought to buy 30,639 hectares (120 square miles) of land on the north shore of Iceland in a deal which would have been worth about 1 billion Icelandic kronur ($8.8 million).

He had hoped the site in Iceland's northeast ? which would have represented about 0.3 percent of the island's land mass ? would attract about 10,000 guests a year and create scores of new jobs.

Iceland's Prime Minister, Johanna Sigurdardottir, had previously said she would welcome Huang's investment, particularly as the nation recovers from the collapse of its banking industry in 2008.

Since its financial meltdown, Iceland's economy has begun to recover ? with the International Monetary Fund predicting economic growth of 2.5 percent in 2012, far better than its struggling European neighbors.

However, the interior ministry confirmed it had ruled it could not lift the country's strict restrictions on the purchase of land by foreigners to allow the deal to go ahead.

"The ministry believes that it's not possible to look past how much land the company wanted to purchase," it said in a statement. "There is no precedent for land on this scale being sold to foreigners."

Referring to Iceland's law on land sales, the ministry said "it was considered necessary to limit foreigner's rights to property in Iceland to protect Iceland's independence" and to ensure that Icelandic people ? rather than foreign investors ? are able to benefit from the country's resources.

Some critics of the proposed deal had raised concerns that allowing Huang to purchase the land could give China a strategic toehold in the Arctic Circle, where nations are scrambling to claim natural resources and melting ice caps are expected to eventually open up new, faster global shipping lanes.

Huang previously rejected those claims, and insisted that he planned the Icelandic site to be among a chain of nature resorts in China, the United States and Scandinavia.

Halldor Johannsson, Huang's representative in Iceland, said he was surprised by the government's rebuff and claimed Icelandic law did not include limits on the size of a parcel of land an investor could purchase.

Newsmaker: Technocrat "oil man" takes charge of Libya lifeline (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Libya's new oil minister is seen as the right kind of technocrat, deeply experienced yet not too closely tied to the former regime of Muammar Gaddafi, to help restore the OPEC member's economic lifeline after eight months of war.

Abdulrahman Ben Yazza is in his mid-50s and brings experience from both Libya's oil industry and Italian firm Eni, the largest foreign oil producer in Libya before the war.

He worked at Libya's Waha Oil company and at the state-owned National Oil Corporation (NOC), culminating in a seat on the management committee. He then headed a joint venture between NOC and Eni.

"He's an excellent oil man," NOC Chairman Nuri Berruien told Reuters. "He's a first-class professional ... The most important (thing) is that he's from the oil patch. It is very important, it is good to work with people who speak your tongue."

A source close to Ben Yazza said the married father of four from Tripoli had been living in Milan for the last few years and traveling frequently to Libya.

"Ben Yazza is an old guy, well known and well liked. He knows Eni very well but that doesn't mean he will be pro-Eni ... he will be pro-Libyan," one Libyan oil industry source said.

"He's more a technocrat politician. Remember this is a transitory government, a bit like the Monti government in Italy ...It doesn't represent the power equilibrium and none of the big shots are in it."

Of all the new appointments in Prime Minister Abdurrahim El Keib's government, set to lead the country to elections next year, analysts and industry sources said Ben Yazza is seen as the most technocratic and least colored by the country's regional politics.

"In meetings he would listen to everyone's opinion," a person who worked with him at the NOC said, describing Ben Yazza as "very respectable."

NEW FACES

Before the February revolt, Libya's oil policy was run by the NOC headed by Shokri Ghanem, who defected in June and is believed to be living in Europe.

Officials have since indicated there will be changes, with plans to split commercial arrangements from policy.

Ben Yazza himself is seen as somewhat independent despite his NOC history, as a man who reportedly clashed at one point with Ghanem and who carries no strong affiliation with the ousted regime.

He is "very competent with a strong personality," one diplomatic source said.

"There were other candidates in the sector who had good international pedigrees, but they were often very closely associated with Col. Gaddafi - or they amplified their connections with Gaddafi in order to increase their prestige," said Geoff Porter, a U.S. independent expert on Libya.

"In the new post-Gaddafi Libya, they are tainted and would have been rejected by the Libyan population and by the hydrocarbon sector workers in particular."

The new set of faces will have to sustain the revival of the industry, which is returning to the international market faster than expected.

Libya holds Africa's largest oil reserves and was pumping 1.6 million barrels per day before the revolt.

Questions remain about the future, with a potential shake-up that would give more power to the oil ministry and carve up the NOC's responsibilities.

Berruien said the oil ministry and NOC would "complement each other."

Ben Yazza's appointment could see a number of former Libyan state oil company executives return to the public sector, according to political risk consultancy Eurasia Group.

"Highly experienced and extremely well-connected, we expect Ben Yazza to announce the recruitment of a number of his former NOC colleagues and friends to the NOC and the ministry," it said.

"The implications for the sector are good. Separating the regulatory and oversight functions from operations will remove some conflicts of interest," it said.

"Ben Yazza (will have) the opportunity to root out some of the more entrenched examples of corruption."

Still, he could encounter opposition from some workers still wary of former NOC officials. Waha Oil workers just recently ended a strike after their demands for a new chairman were met.

"Lack of experienced personnel has long been a retarding factor in the Libyan oil and gas sector and Ben Yazza will see the return of senior officials currently with IOCs (independent oil companies) as important if the sector is to reach its full potential," Eurasia said.

Vienna opera singer Jurinac dies at 90 (AP)

BERLIN ? Sena Jurinac, one of the Vienna State Opera's most celebrated performers in the 1940s and 50s in roles as both a soprano and mezzo-soprano, has died in southern Germany at age 90.

The Vienna State Opera, which confirmed the death Wednesday, said Jurinac died Tuesday at her home near Augsburg.

"We are mourning the loss of a legendary artist who shaped not only the Vienna State Opera but also the entire opera world" opera director Dominique Meyer said in a statement.

Born in Travnik in Yugoslavia in October 1921, Jurinac studied at the academy of music in Zagreb and sang at the opera there before she made her debut at the Vienna opera as Cherubino in "The Marriage of Figaro" on May 1, 1945 ? the first production after World War II.

She performed as Cherubino 129 times and went on to become one of the best-known singers at the opera house in the 1940s and 50s, singing in operas including "Don Giovanni," "Der Rosenkavalier" and "La Boheme." Altogether she was on stage at the Vienna opera 1,268 times in 46 different parts.

Jurinac also appeared abroad, including performances at the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden, in San Francisco, Milan and Buenos Aires.

She became a darling of the public at the Salzburg Festival where she sang for the first time in 1947 as Dorabella in "Cosi fan tutte."

In a statement, the Salzburg Festival said that Jurinac was one of the artists that helped build Salzburg's international fame during the postwar years.

"The festival owes magic moments to Sena Jurinac for which both the audience and the press celebrated her alike," festival president Helga Rabl-Stadler said. "The black flag, which will fly at the festival's house today, is a tiny sign for the great sadness and gratitude that fulfills us."

Bachmann, Perry clash over Pakistan aid

(AP) ? Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann and Texas Gov. Rick Perry are clashing over whether the United States should continue to provide more than $1 billion in aid to Pakistan.

Perry says that Pakistan has shown "time after time" that it cannot be trusted and that he would not send the country "one penny ? period."

Bachmann says Perry's approach is "naive," arguing that the U.S. needs to have a presence in the region to protect its national security. She called Pakistan a "violent, unstable nation" with more than a dozen nuclear sites that could be penetrated.

The Obama administration has said the U.S. relationship with Islamabad is vital to the nation's national security and has urged Pakistan to crack down on the Taliban-linked Haqqani network.

Obama statement on supercommittee failure (AP)

President Barack Obama's statement at the White House on Monday after the congressional supercommittee failed to produce a deficit-cutting plan:

Good afternoon. As you all know, last summer I signed a law that will cut nearly $1 trillion of spending over the next 10 years. Part of that law also required Congress to reduce the deficit by an additional $1.2 trillion by the end of this year.

In September, I sent them a detailed plan that would have gone above and beyond that goal. It's a plan that would reduce the deficit by an additional $3 trillion, by cutting spending, slowing the growth of Medicare and Medicaid, and asking the wealthiest Americans to pay their fair share.

In addition to my plan, there were a number of other bipartisan plans for them to consider from both Democrats and Republicans, all of which promoted a balanced approach. This kind of balanced approach to reducing our deficit -- an approach where everybody gives a little bit, and everyone does their fair share -- is supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans -- Democrats, independents, and Republicans. It's supported by experts and economists from all across the political spectrum. And to their credit, many Democrats in Congress were willing to put politics aside and commit to reasonable adjustments that would have reduced the cost of Medicare, as long as they were part of a balanced approach.

But despite the broad agreement that exists for such an approach, there's still too many Republicans in Congress who have refused to listen to the voices of reason and compromise that are coming from outside of Washington. They continue to insist on protecting $100 billion worth of tax cuts for the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans at any cost, even if it means reducing the deficit with deep cuts to things like education and medical research. Even if it means deep cuts in Medicare.

So at this point, at least, they simply will not budge from that negotiating position. And so far, that refusal continues to be the main stumbling block that has prevented Congress from reaching an agreement to further reduce our deficit.

Now, we are not in the same situation that we were -- that we were in in August. There is no imminent threat to us defaulting on the debt that we owe. There are already $1 trillion worth of spending cuts that are locked in. And part of the law that I signed this summer stated that if Congress could not reach an agreement on the deficit, there would be another $1.2 trillion of automatic cuts in 2013 -- divided equally between domestic spending and defense spending.

One way or another, we will be trimming the deficit by a total of at least $2.2 trillion over the next 10 years. That's going to happen, one way or another. We've got $1 trillion locked in, and either Congress comes up with $1.2 trillion, which so far they've failed to do, or the sequester kicks in and these automatic spending cuts will occur that bring in an additional $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction.

Now, the question right now is whether we can reduce the deficit in a way that helps the economy grow, that operates with a scalpel, not with a hatchet, and if not, whether Congress is willing to stick to the painful deal that we made in August for the automatic cuts. Already, some in Congress are trying to undo these automatic spending cuts.

My message to them is simple: No. I will veto any effort to get rid of those automatic spending cuts to domestic and defense spending. There will be no easy off ramps on this one.

We need to keep the pressure up to compromise -- not turn off the pressure. The only way these spending cuts will not take place is if Congress gets back to work and agrees on a balanced plan to reduce the deficit by at least $1.2 trillion. That's exactly what they need to do. That's the job they promised to do. And they've still got a year to figure it out.

Although Congress has not come to an agreement yet, nothing prevents them from coming up with an agreement in the days ahead. They can still come together around a balanced plan. I believe Democrats are prepared to do so. My expectation is, is that there will be some Republicans who are still interested in preventing the automatic cuts from taking place. And, as I have from the beginning, I stand ready and willing to work with anybody that's ready to engage in that effort to create a balanced plan for deficit reduction.

Now, in the meantime, we've got a lot of work left to do this year. Before Congress leaves next month, we have to work together to cut taxes for workers and small business owners all across America. If we don't act, taxes will go up for every single American, starting next year. And I'm not about to let that happen. Middle-class Americans can't afford to lose $1,000 next year because Congress won't act. And I can only hope that members of Congress who've been fighting so hard to protect tax breaks for the wealthy will fight just as hard to protect tax breaks for small business owners and middle-class families.

We still need to put construction workers back on the job rebuilding our roads and our bridges. We still need to put our teachers back in the classroom educating our kids.

So when everybody gets back from Thanksgiving, it's time to get some work done for the American people. All around the country, Americans are working hard to live within their means and meet their responsibilities. And I know they expect Washington to do the same.

Thanks.

Highly efficient method for creating flexible, transparent electrodes developed

ScienceDaily (Nov. 22, 2011) ? As the market for liquid crystal displays and other electronics continues to drive up the price of indium -- the material used to make the indium tin oxide (ITO) transparent electrodes in these devices -- scientists have been searching for a less costly and more dynamic alternative, particularly for use in future flexible electronics.

Besides its high price, ITO has several drawbacks. It's brittle, making it impractical for use in flexible displays and solar cells, and there is a lack of availability of indium, which is found primarily in Asia. Further, the production of ITO films is relatively inefficient.

Now, researchers at UCLA report in the journal ACS Nano that they have developed a unique method for producing transparent electrodes that uses silver nanowires in combination with other nanomaterials. The new electrodes are flexible and highly conductive and overcome the limitations associated with ITO.

For some time, silver nanowire (AgNW) networks have been seen as promising candidates to replace ITO because they are flexible and each wire is highly conductive. But complicated treatments have often been required to fuse crossed AgNWs to achieve low resistance and good substrate adhesion. To address this, the UCLA researchers demonstrated that by fusing AgNWs with metal-oxide nanoparticles and organic polymers, they could efficiently produce highly transparent conductors.

The team of researchers represents a collaboration between the department of materials science and engineering at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science; the department of chemistry and biochemistry in the UCLA College of Letters and Science; and the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) at UCLA.

The team was led by Yang Yang, a professor of materials science and engineering, and Paul Weiss, director of the CNSI and a professor of materials science and engineering and of chemistry and biochemistry.

"In this work, we demonstrate a simple and effective solution method to achieve highly conductive AgNW composite films with excellent optical transparency and mechanical properties," said Yang who also directs the Nano Renewable Energy Center at the CNSI. "This is by far the best solution: a processed, transparent electrode that is compatible with a wide variety of substrate choices."

Scientists can easily spray a surface with the nanowires to make a transparent mat, but the challenge is to make the silver nanowires adhere to the surface more securely without the use of extreme temperatures (200? C) or high pressures, steps that make the nanomaterials less compatible with the sensitive organic materials typically used to make flexible electronics.

To meet this challenge, Rui Zhu, the paper's first author, developed a low-temperature method to make high-performance transparent electrodes from silver nanowires using spray coating of a unique combination of nanomaterials.

First, researchers sprayed a solution of commercially available silver nanowires onto a surface. They then treated the nanowires with a solution of titanium dioxide nanoparticles to create a hybrid film. As the film dries, capillary forces pull the nanowires together, improving the film's conductivity. The scientists then coated the film with a layer of conductive polymer to increase the wires' adhesion to the surface.

The AgNW composite meshes are highly conductive, with excellent optical transparency and mechanical properties. The research team also built solar cells using the new electrodes and found that their performance was comparable to that of solar cells made with indium tin oxide.

The research received support from the Office of Naval Research and the Kavli Foundation.

The ThunderMIUI Home Screen [Featured Home Screen]

The ThunderMIUI Home ScreenToday, I'm actually featuring my own home screen, inspired by the new MIUI ROM for the HTC Thunderbolt and all the home screens you guys have posted over the months?including a bunch of great text-based widgets.

I've been loving the home screens you guys have posted, and it inspired me to give mine a bit of an overhaul?and, with one of my favorite ROMs?MIUI?finally available for my phone, it was the perfect time. Here are some of the highlights:

  • The gorgeous MIUI ROM. To see if it's available for your device, check their downloads page. Also Google around, since you might be able to find an unofficial port?the Thunderbolt port, for example, is in the late stages of development, so it isn't on the official site, but you can grab it on the RootzWiki forums.
  • The Vexillum Project Icon Theme for MIUI. By default, MIUI only has icons for a few of the default apps, but it just creates a square background for other apps?and it doesn't look great. This theme brings MIUI-optimized icons for a ton of different apps, and is something every MIUI user should have.
  • CalWidget is the calendar widget on the leftmost screen. I've set it up to color-code each event with the same colors I use on Google Calendar (though they could probably use some adjusting for visibility purposes?though for what it's worth, the JPEG compression is partially to blame for that in the picture above).
  • Everyone's favorite, SiMi Clock Widget for the clock at the top of the home screen. Not much else to say about it.
  • Phantom Music Control under the clock widget. I needed the Pro version to use it with the newest version of Google Music.
  • Flick Note for my to-do list widget on the rightmost home screen. I've synced my Todo.txt file with Simplenote as described here, then set up Flick Note's "Single Note" widget on my home screen. I've customized the look using this method to remove the dark background, so it's just text on top of my wallpaper (to keep everything looking the same).
  • I'm using this lock screen, which comes with MIUI. It's beautiful.
  • Since MIUI doesn't have an app launcher, I've just stuffed all the apps I don't want to see in a folder called "Crap" on my 5th home screen. The rest of the apps I occasionally use are just spread out on home screens 1 and 5. Having 5 home screens hasn't brought down performance at all, and this is one of the smoothest ROMs I've ever used.

There's a lot more customization to be had in MIUI (definitely check out the Toggles feature for quick access to settings in your notification bar), but that's about the jist of my home screen. I've barely scratched the surface of MIUI's customization, so definitely check it out if you're into customizing every corner of your Android phone. Note that while it's known for looking like iOS, it doesn't have to?you can use any launcher you want, and there are a ton of other icon themes that are in the more traditional Android style, so don't let its iOS-like nature deter you.

Do you have an awesome, tweaked-into-oblivion home or lock screen of your own that you'd like to share? Go ahead and post it on the #homescreenshowcase forum with a description of how you made it and it may be the next featured home screen.

John Pinette, left, and Microsoft founder Bill Gates arrives at the Frank E. Moss federal courthouse in Salt Lake City, Monday, Nov. 21, 2011. Microsoft's Windows 95 rollout presented the most challenges in the company's history, leading to several last-minute changes to technical features that would no longer support a rival software maker's word processor, Bill Gates testified Monday in a $1 billion antitrust lawsuit filed by the creator of WordPerfect. (AP Photo/Jim Urquhart)

(AP) ? Microsoft's Bill Gates returns to the witness stand Tuesday to defend his company against a $1 billion antitrust lawsuit that claims the software giant tricked a competitor into huge losses and soared onto the market with Windows 95.

Utah-based Novell Inc. sued Microsoft in 2004. The company says Gates duped them into thinking he would include its WordPerfect writing program in the new Windows system, then backed out because he feared it was too good.

Novell said it was later forced to sell WordPerfect for a $1.2 billion loss.

Gates testified Monday that Microsoft was racing to put out Windows 95 when he dropped technical features that would no longer support the rival's word processor because engineers warned it would crash the system.

Windows 95 was a major innovation, and Gates said he had his mind on larger issues.

"We worked super hard. It was the most challenging, trying project we had ever done," the Microsoft co-founder said. "It was a ground-breaking piece of work, and it was very well received when we got it done."

Gates said Novell just couldn't deliver a Windows 95 compatible WordPerfect program in time for rollout, and its own Word program was actually better. He said that by 1994, Microsoft Word was rated No. 1 in the market above WordPerfect.

WordPerfect once had nearly 50 percent of the market for computer writing programs, but its share quickly plummeted to less than 10 percent as Microsoft's own office programs took hold.

Microsoft lawyers say Novell's loss of market share was its own doing because the company didn't develop a Windows compatible WordPerfect program until months after the operating system's rollout.

Gates called it an "important win" in an email to executives.

Attorneys for Novell, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Attachmate Group as a result of a merger earlier this year, concede that Microsoft was under no legal obligation to provide advance access to Windows 95 so Novell could prepare a compatible version. The Redmond, Wash.-based company, however, enticed Novell to work on a version, only to withdraw support months before Windows 95 hit the market, Novell attorney Jeff Johnson said.

Microsoft lawyer David Tulchin argued that Novell's missed opportunity was its own fault, and that Microsoft had no obligation to give a competitor a leg up.

U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz late Monday denied Microsoft's request to dismiss the case. He said Novell's claims appeared thin but that he would let the case continue another month and allow a jury to decide.

Gates was the first witness to testify Monday in his company's defense after a month-long case by Novell. Cross-examination begins Tuesday.

Gates, a billionaire, began by testifying about Microsoft's history. He was just 19 when he helped found the company. Today, Microsoft is one of the world's largest software makers, with a market value of more than $210 billion.

"We thought everybody would have a personal computer on every desk and in every home," Gates said. "We wanted to be there and be the first."

Army defectors escalate Syrian uprising

Attacks by army defectors are transforming the Syrian uprising into an armed insurgency that threatens to spiral into civil war. The Free Syrian Army holds no territory, appears largely disorganized and is up against a fiercely loyal and cohesive military that will stop at nothing to protect the regime.

Still, without foreign military intervention or significant cracks in President Bashar Assad's iron rule, the rebel group has emerged as the best hope for a growing number of protesters who have all but given up on peaceful resistance.

Story: New phase in uprising? Syrian rebels launch 1st attack in capital

"They are the real heroes of this revolution," said one anti-regime protester in the central city of Hama, the site of a massacre by Assad's father and predecessor in 1982 and a hotbed of resistance to the regime. "Everyone else has abandoned us."

Like most Assad opponents who spoke to The Associated Press, he asked that his name not be used for fear the regime will retaliate against him or his family.

There are concerns the presence of an organized armed rebel group has given authorities a pretext to crack down even harder on dissent, pushing the country toward civil war. The sectarian divide in Syria, where members of Assad's minority Alawite sect rule over a Sunni Muslim majority and others, means an insurgency could escalate quickly.

The leader of the Free Syrian Army, breakaway air force colonel Riad al-Asaad, acknowledges nearly all the defectors under his command ? some 15,000 ? are low-level Sunni conscripts. The men are armed with rocket-propelled grenades, rifles and guns they took with them when they deserted, as well as light weapons they acquired on the black market, he says.

Credible threat
The FSA holds no territory in Syria and al-Asaad himself is based in Turkey, where thousands of Syrian refugees have taken shelter since the uprising began. Communications with defectors on the ground is one of the biggest challenges to the group's growth.

Still, the FSA is a credible threat to the Assad regime, said Riad Kahwaji, CEO of the Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis in Beirut.

"We're talking about troops who know the enemy very well, because they were members of these forces," Kahwaji told The Associated Press. "They know them by name, their culture, their habits. They know all the secrets. They are a serious threat to the regime."

Why Syria?s revolution needs a Benghazi

The standing army in Syria is estimated to be about 250,000, but that figure is closer to 700,000 if one includes the reserves, Kahwaji said. The top brass and many members of the standing army belong to Assad's Alawite sect, but the reserves are mainly Sunni.

"If (the conflict) continues at this rate, you're going to have pure Alawite troops fighting Sunni troops," he said in a telephone interview.

FSA attacks have grown increasingly sophisticated in recent weeks, prompting worldwide alarm that the situation in Syria is spiraling out of control.

Russia's foreign minister compared an FSA attack last week on an air force intelligence compound outside Damascus to the beginning of a civil war, and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the Syrian defectors could fuel a civil war.

UK: Remain peacful
Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague, who met with opposition members Monday, stressed that the uprising should remain peaceful.

"I've ... emphasized to them the importance of non-violent protest and the importance of retaining international support in this situation through non-violent protest," he said.

Although it remains unclear exactly how powerful the FSA is, the attacks appear to have grown in the past few weeks as its members carried out ambushes that have killed dozens of soldiers and security personnel.

Young and restless: Demographics fuel Mideast protests

Syria severely restricts the work of journalists but amateur videos posted online showed damaged and burned security vehicles in several areas of Syria.

"Win or Die," proclaims the slogan on the group's Facebook page, through which it disseminates information and claims responsibility for attacks.

In an interview with the AP last month, al-Asaad, who defected in July, called on more Syrians to join his ranks.

"We encourage our Alawite and Christian brothers to defect so we can liberate Syria and build our future together," he said in a telephone interview from his base in Turkey.

In heavily anti-regime areas of Syria, many Syrians have been sheltering defectors, protecting them from raiding security forces.

'Serious danger'
"The situation is in serious danger of spiraling beyond the regime's control," said David Hartwell, senior Middle East and North Africa analyst at IHS Jane's in London. He cited attacks by the defectors coupled with more weapons reportedly being smuggled into Syria.

But in an example of disorganization that could prove damaging to the group, al-Asaad on Monday retracted earlier claims that his followers had launched an unprecedented attack on Assad's Baath party headquarters inside the capital, Damascus ? an embarrassing turnaround for the movement.

Al-Asaad said in a video posted on the group's Facebook page Sunday evening that Assad's government was trying to tarnish the image of the revolution.

"We did not target the party building in Damascus and we will not target any civilian installation," said the FSA commander, who was wearing his military uniform.

Still, he did not address why his group had claimed responsibility for such an attack after Damascus residents reported hearing two loud blasts before dawn Sunday. In a Facebook posting ? which had been removed by Monday morning ? the FSA said it fired rocket-propelled grenades at the ruling party headquarters.

The group disseminates information through its Twitter and Facebook page, which includes a bank account number in Turkey for those wishing to support the revolution.

Al-Asaad, a soft spoken, mustachioed man, brands his group as "the voice of the Syrian people." But he acknowledges it is up against a major challenge.

Unlike the armies of Tunisia and Egypt, Syria's military has stood fiercely by the country's leader as Assad faces down an extraordinary protest movement.

Assad, and his father before him, stacked key military posts with members of their minority Alawite sect over the past 40 years, ensuring the loyalty of the armed forces by melding the fate of the army and the regime.

International intervention, such as the NATO action in Libya that helped topple Moammar Gadhafi, is all but out of the question in Syria. There also is real concern that Assad's ouster would spread chaos around the region.

Without external help, the group will find it extremely hard to claim a slice of Syrian territory like the anti-Gadhafi fighters in their de facto capital Benghazi.

In an interview with Al-Jazeera this week, Al-Asaad said his goal is to have the Syrian army crumble from within.

"They have tanks and airplanes, but they fear us with our small weapons," he said. "We have the Syrian people behind us. This is our strength."

Google Launches Search App for iPad -- With a Siri-like Feature [VIDEO] (Mashable)

Google unveiled the latest version of its free Search app for the iPad on Monday, making searching on the Apple device faster and more intuitive -- and, ironically, giving Android tablet users another reason to switch. Google's YouTube video on the app, above, highlights some of the key new features of the free app -- including an easy way to recommend and share content with others on Google+, Siri-like voice search, and Google Instant -- that is, seeing display results as soon as you begin to type, without the need of pressing the search button.

[More from Mashable: Google Street View Now Shows Ski Slopes [VIDEO]]

"You?ll notice that searching is faster and more interactive from your first keystroke," said Daniel Fish, Software Engineer for the Google Search app, on the Google Mobile Blog.

The app ? available for iPads with iOS 4.0 or higher ? also includes an innovative way to look at search results and websites side by side. New pages are added with a slide-in pane that layers over search results and makes it easy to go back and forth between them.

[More from Mashable: Google+ Adds Mutual Circle Chat]

The updated app also makes revisiting previous searches seamless, with a Visual Search History feature. Searching for images has also been optimized. Tapping on a picture launches an image carousel that lets you swipe through to see other photos. Meanwhile, for those with Siri on the brain, the app provides a similar service allowing users to search by voice and skip typing all together.

Will you use Google's Search app rather than going to your browser on the iPad? Let us know in the comments.

More deals in focus as Olympus scandal widens (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? As attention in the Olympus (7733.T) accounting scandal turns to whether funds used to cover up losses were funneled to criminal groups, scrutiny is set to increase on deals not yet in the spotlight, including an ill-fated $780 million investment in technology firm ITX.

Olympus and affiliated firms spent $4.1 billion on 57 acquisitions since 2000 in an aggressive push to diversify its operations and grow outside Japan. The largest was its $2.2 billion buyout of British medical equipment firm Gyrus in 2008, Thomson Reuters data shows.

To date the scandal has centered on a $687 million advisory fee tied to the Gyrus deal and its purchase of three obscure, loss-making domestic firms for $773 million between 2006 and 2008. Olympus has admitted it paid excessively in both cases to cover securities losses stretching back 20 years.

With suspicion growing among investigators that criminal groups may have been involved, a more thorough review now appears certain.

Much of the focus will likely fall on ITX, a former technology venture investor that played a key role in the group's diversification drive since 2000.

"There needs to be a full house-cleaning and ultimately everything needs to be checked, including ITX," said Josh Shores, a principal at Southeastern Asset Management, which holds 5 percent of Olympus, the camera and medical device maker's top non-Japanese shareholder.

A unit from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's organized crime division has joined an investigation into the scandal, though gangster involvement has not yet been confirmed, a source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Friday.

The New York Times has reported that Japanese officials were investigating an apparent $4.9 billion hole in Olympus' accounts and possible payoffs to crime syndicates, citing a memo circulated at a meeting of regulators, prosecutors and police.

Olympus has said a former vice president told the company none of the funds involved in the cover-up had gone to "anti-social forces" -- a euphemism for mafia in Japan -- but the firm was waiting for a report from an independent panel, due next month.

CONTROVERSIAL BUY

The scandal erupted on October 14 when Olympus ousted chief executive Michael Woodford after he questioned the Gyrus fee and the purchase of medical waste recycler Altis, cooking container maker News Chef and health food firm Humalabo. It wrote down most of the value of the 3 domestic deals in 2009.

Since then Woodford has expressed doubts about ITX and other deals, though he has not provided any evidence of wrongdoing.

Olympus bought ITX, now primarily a mobile phone retailer, for about 60 billion yen ($780 million) in a series of transactions between 2000 and 2011. It has written off a third of that investment and still carries 23 billion yen in ITX-related goodwill on its books.

The ITX purchase had been seen as controversial from the outset given the risky nature of venture investments and the lack of synergy with Olympus' core businesses of diagnostic endoscopes and digital cameras.

The scandal has also brought to light a potential conflict of interest involving Akinobu Yokoo, a director and president of ITX between 2000 and 2005.

Akinobu is the older brother of Nobumasa Yokoo, an ex-Nomura banker who ran a consulting firm, Global Company, that was hired by Olympus in 2000 to scout out new businesses and steered the investment into Altis, News Chef and Humalabo.

Repeated attempts to reach Nobumasa have been unsuccessful and his whereabouts are unknown. Akinobu, who went on to serve as an executive officer at Olympus between 2005 and 2009 and is now president of a parts unit of Japan Airlines, has denied any involvement in the deals brokered by his brother.

The New York Times report also said the memo identified one company acquired by ITX as having possible links with a major crime syndicate. Reuters has not been able to verify the existence of the memo or its assertions.

ITX cut 20 deals for $700 million since 2000, playing a pivotal role in Olympus's diversification strategy under the stewardship of former president Tsyuoshi Kikukawa, one of three executives targeted by investigators for orchestrating the scam.

The number of Olympus subsidiaries and affiliates jumped from 67 to 199 over the past 10 years. While many of the acquisitions were related to the medical business, there were also outliers like the 2005 investment in a country club.

Probing all those investments could complicate the task of the independent panel commissioned by Olympus to investigate its dubious deals. The panel is due to report its findings early next month, in time for Olympus to submit its first half earnings by a December 14 deadline to avoid having its shares delisted from the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

"The cover-up goes back at least 20 years. The investigation into past deals will require a considerable amount of scrutiny and time," said Yo Ota, a lawyer at Nishimura & Asahi in Tokyo.
