Making the shortest light bursts leads to better understanding of nature

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2012) ? An attosecond is a ridiculously brief sliver of time -- a scant billionth of a billionth of a second. This may seem too short to have any practical applications, but at the atomic level, where electrons zip and jump about, these vanishingly short timescales are crucial to a deeper understanding of science.

In a paper accepted for publication in the American Institute of Physics' journal Review of Scientific Instruments, a team of researchers describes an advanced experimental system that can generate attosecond bursts of extreme ultraviolet light. Such pulses are the shortest controllable light pulses available to science. With these pulses, according to the researchers, it's possible to measure the dynamics of electrons in matter in real-time. Advances in attosecond science may enable scientists to verify theories that describe how matter behaves at a fundamental level, how certain important chemical reactions -- such as photosynthesis -- work. Additional advances may eventually lead to the control of chemical reactions.

"Understanding how matter works at the level of its electrons is likely to lead to new scientific tools and to novel technologies," said Felix Frank, of Imperial College in London and one of the authors on the paper. "In the future, this knowledge could help us to make better drugs, more efficient solar cells, and other things we can't yet foresee."

The researchers were able to produce these pulses by a process called high harmonic generation (HHG). The fundamental technology driving their setup is a high-power femtosecond laser system (femtoseconds are three orders of magnitude longer than attoseconds). The near infrared femtosecond laser pulses are corralled through a waveguide and a series of specialized mirrors, causing them to be compressed in time. With their waveforms precisely controlled, these compressed pulses are then focused into a gas target, creating an attosecond burst of extreme ultraviolet radiation. The experimental system developed by the researchers is able to accurately measure the attosecond pulses and deliver them to a variety of experiments in conjugation with other precisely synchronized laser pulses. "Though it incorporates many novel features, our system builds on a decade of research conducted by physics groups around the world," said John Tisch, lead scientist developing the technology at Imperial College.

(AP) ? Lech Walesa is a big fan of social media ? and says if he had it back when he founded the Solidarity rights movement in 1980, he wouldn't have had to keep meeting opposition colleagues in stadiums.

Honored with a 1983 Nobel Peace Prize for his role in peacefully ending communism in Poland, Walesa said he often discussed strategy with other activists while playing soccer or watching other sports to thwart Communist security agents determined to stop such meetings.

"In those days, there were no possibilities of communicating on a larger scale, there were no mobile phones," Walesa told The Associated Press in an interview Friday. "It was inconvenient for them (agents) to make arrests in a pitch (or) disturb a sports event, so we used such opportunities to agree on things."

Walesa served as democratic Poland's first popularly elected president from 1990-95. Now he travels the globe lecturing on having led a peaceful transition from communism to democracy, which Poles voted for in 1989.

The 68-year-old said his Samsung tablet and other Internet communications today help him work "faster, better, wiser."

He said he uses a tablet because it is the "wisest thing ever invented."

"A small appliance that I can put in my pocket and use in my lectures. I have texts, old and new," Walesa said. "It helps me."

Walesa was in Warsaw for the European Championships match in which Italy beat Germany 2-1 and advanced to the final.

Innovation Summit and Mentoring Partnership With Young African ...

Office of the Spokesperson
Department of State
Washington, DC

June 27, 2012

On June 29, Deputy Assistant Secretary for African Affairs Bruce Wharton will welcome to Chicago, Illinois sixty-two young leaders from sub-Saharan Africa in a closing session of their three-week professional exchange in the United States. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State in collaboration with Meridian International Center, the Innovation Summit and Mentoring Partnership with Young African Leaders focused on capacity building for young business and social entrepreneurs.

The program began June 14-15 in Washington DC where delegates participated in the Innovation Summit with U.S. Government, business, and civil society leaders to expand their networks with U.S. businesses and discuss investment opportunities in Africa. From June 16-28, delegates participated in a two-week professional development opportunity with American businesses in nine U.S. cities, including Seattle, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Miami, Huntsville, Denver, Chicago and Cincinnati. The closing session in Chicago will offer each participant an opportunity to map out an action plan to implement newly acquired business skills in his or her home country. Looking to the future, the relationships fostered during the Innovation Summit and Mentoring Partnership will serve as a catalyst for greater U.S.-Africa collaboration in promoting business innovation, investment, and social responsibility activities in Africa.

The Innovation Summit and Mentoring Partnership with Young African Leaders program was the latest engagement in the Obama Administration?s President?s Young African Leaders? Initiative, which began in 2010 with President Obama?s Forum with Young African Leaders. Previous signature engagements with African youth include the First Lady?s Young African Women Leaders Forum in June 2011 and more than 2,000 youth programs conducted in sub-Saharan Africa by the Department of State. This multi-year initiative advances U.S. understanding of and access to Africa?s large youth population and enriches their potential to contribute to economic, political, and social development in Africa.

10 great ideas from Micah Solomon's High-Tech, High Touch ...

{This is an article by hospitality writer/reviewer? Josiah Mackenzie.Thanks, Josiah! }

High-Tech, High-Touch Customer Service (cover) -click for free chapter

High-Tech, High-Touch Customer Service by business keynote speaker, customer service consultant, and bestselling author Micah Solomon is packed with good ideas ? here are ten of my favorites after reading it last week:

  1. ?Technology needs people?and a culture that supports those people?s best efforts.
  2. ?Expect things to go wrong. Plan for this eventuality, keeping the emotional needs of your customer central.
  3. ?A well-thought-out problem-resolution process starts by active ?harvesting? of complaints?by being eagerly open to receiving input.
  4. ?For masterful companies, providing something extra is the standard throughout the customer experience. These extras are always the things the more shortsighted among a company?s stakeholders want to cut first, but without them it?s almost impossible to differentiate your service.
  5. ?Nobody ever shouts out, ?Yeehaw?I just had an incredibly satisfactory customer service experience.? But if your service truly anticipates your customers? desires and wishes, your customers will be well on their way to feeling they can?t, or certainly don?t want to, live without you.
  6. ?Any business advantage you pride yourself on can be copied by a competitor?.The culture of your company is the exception to this rule. Strong company cultures are overwhelmingly knockoff resistant.
  7. ?Ritz-Carlton?s Three Stages of Service are: 1. Warm welcome 2. Anticipation of and compliance with guest needs 3. Fond farewell
  8. ?Restaurateur Danny Meyer: the two things people want from the hospitality experience are a sense of acknowledgment and, on returning, a sense of being remembered.
  9. ?Small Error + Slow Response Time = Colossal PR Disaster. The magnitude of a social media uproar increases disproportionately with the length of your response time.
  10. ?You need technologically savvy people supporting your social media customer service work, but the people actually helming the operation and responding to customers need to be the same ones who are expert at day-to-day customer service operations and are responsible for interacting with your customers.?

And a bonus tidbit from Cornell?s Center for Hospitality Research: a 250-room hotel will have approximately 5,000 staff-guest interactions per day. As Micah says,? ?There?s no way someone in a leadership position can dictate every single one of those five thousand interactions. Rather, a leader?s only chance to get the preponderance of these interactions right is to develop a shared cultural understanding of what needs to be done?and why.?

The book is a great read for anyone looking to design and deliver better customer experiences with the help of technology. See the details here?.

?Micah Solomon conveys an up-to-the minute and deeply practical take on customer service, business success, and the twin importance of people and technology.? ?Steve Wozniak, Apple co-founder

Roberto Lovato: Supreme Court, Brewer and Obama Usher in Juan Crow Era

When she heard today's Supreme Court decision upholding the "reasonable suspicion" (a k a "papers, please") provisions of Arizona's SB-1070, immigrant rights activist Isabel Garcia saw the Arizonification of the nation. "We've been fighting local 'reasonable suspicion' laws here in Arizona for decades," said Garcia, a Pima County public defender and co-chair of Coalici?n de Derechos Humanos, an organization dedicated to defending immigrants and documenting immigrant deaths in the desert. "Here in Tucson 'reasonable suspicion' has proven a very weak and vague legal standard that is responsible for lots of family separations, enormous suffering--and death. Now, SB-1070 is going to haunt those of you in the rest of the country."

President Obama's allies in the immigrant rights movement view the Supreme Court decision to strike down three of the four provisions of SB-1070 as a reason to celebrate and to rally voters in the 2012 presidential race. Garcia does not. In fact, she and many immigration activists throughout the country view the Court's decision as a threat to the civil liberties of immigrants and non-immigrants alike. They fear how the decision makes "Juan Crow" the law of the land.

"The Supreme Court is making it possible for hundreds of thousands of police officers throughout the country to racially profile millions of people," Garcia stated during a phone interview. "We have not seen the potential for this scale of racial profiling and discrimination since Jim Crow."

The Court's decision comes amidst immigration wars between the GOP and the Democrats in which truth about immigration policy is the first casualty. Garcia notes with deep concern, for example, how SB-1070 and the "get tough" responses of both parties come at a time when immigration to the United States is at an all-time low. "Nobody's talking about how Jan Brewer and the Republicans pushed this law when crime and immigration at the border had dropped radically" said Garcia, adding, "And nobody is telling us that the Obama administration has 23,000 [Border Patrol] agents committed to Arizona and how they don't have much of a job to do in stopping migration flows because it's at historic lows."

Also lost in the reporting on the Supreme Court decision, says Garcia, is any sense of what she and others consider the central political fact about Arizona's racial profiling law: both Democrats and Republicans, both Barack Obama and Jan Brewer, made the 'papers, please' provisions of SB-1070 possible. In other words, both parties promoted, protected and enforced Arizona's and other local versions of Juan Crow.

Prior to Arizona's passage of SB-1070, the Obama administration continued and expanded George W. Bush-era immigration policies that were, until today, the most massive racial profiling programs to date. Known respectively as "287g" and "Secure Communities," these controversial federal programs force local law enforcement agencies and officials to collaborate with federal immigration officials. (Ironically, the Supreme Court decision comes on the same day the Obama administration formally announced the long-expected phasing out of 278g.) Federal provisions expanding Secure Communities into every jurisdiction in the country by 2013 mean that every local cop in the nation has or will become a de facto immigration officer.

Obama's decision to continue and expand these programs (previously, candidate Obama promised to abolish or fundamentally soften them) gave Arizona officials like Brewer and ?ber-Sheriff Joe Arpaio the green light to expand their anti-immigrant crusade. So in suing Arizona and in going to the Supreme Court, President Obama was essentially suing the very policies he could have ended by abolishing programs he promised to abolish when he was candidate Obama.

As with the racial profiling provisions of SB-1070, the racial profiling at the heart of 287g and SCOMM has been the subject of class-action law suits by the ACLU and others, who have documented widespread SB 1070-like racial profiling by Border Patrol agents, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and other federal authorities. Garcia and Derechos Humanos' decade-long fight against reasonable suspicion component of Tucson's Juan Crow laws has yielded similar findings, similar stories with grave consequences.

While President Obama was declaring that he was "pleased" that the Court struck down three provisions of the law and while Arizona Governor Jan Brewer was claiming "victory" on the reasonable suspicion provision, Isabel Garcia told me the story of Rene Torres.

"Rene Torres was an honorable man; he had five US citizen children; he paid his taxes; he lived in Arizona for many years--but he had no papers," she said."In the first months of the Obama administration, Rene was racially profiled by Tucson sheriffs, handed over to ICE and then deported. He then died in the desert when he tried to come back to be with his five children and his wife. He died because local laws allowed local sheriffs to racially profile him," said Garcia. "I fear that the Supreme Court has just made it easier for people across the country to suffer or even die like this. This is why we must continue to fight and defeat this racist law."

Reference and Education Thoughts: Easy Way to Compare ...

Insurance car is important part to prevent more problems when such car encounters an accident. Even though for new car owner such car insurance is like spending money for nothing, actually it can be a guarantee that such person will get some compensation when facing unwanted accident. People cannot ascertain that they will always go safely with their car. They may get such car accident directly in front of their home unexpectedly. Without car insurance they will lose a lot of money for car repair, their own treatment, and many other expenses. Furthermore, if they are found guilty at such accident they will need to spend much more money.

Currently, many companies offer auto insurance with different premium rate and policies. As every state typically requires every car owner to insure his or her car, people need to find insurance company that suits their needs. Easy way to find such company is through internet. Traditionally, people use the service of specific brokers to find company that offers good protection with low premium. To use such service people need to spend lot more money.

But now, with internet service people do not need to meet such complexity. Some online websites are associated with many car insurance companies. People can just visit such websites to compare insurance rate and policy of each company that becomes their affiliates.

BRUSSELS (AP) ? A European court on Wednesday upheld most of a massive fine levied against Microsoft by the European Commission's competition watchdog, closing a case against the software giant that began in 1998.

In an appeals ruling, the General Court of the European Union rejected Microsoft Corp.'s request to dismiss the fine levied in 2008, but did trim it by ?39 million to ?860 million ($1.1 billion). Counting two earlier fines, the case has wound up costing Microsoft a grand total of ?1.64 billion.

That's the most ever resulting from a single antitrust case in Europe, though in 2009 Intel Corp. was hit with the largest single fine, ?1.09 billion.

The court in Luxembourg said its decision "essentially upholds the Commission's decision and rejects all the arguments put forward by Microsoft in support of annulment."

The ?860 million fine is a "penalty for noncompliance" with the watchdog's 2004 order for Microsoft to make computer programming code available that would allow competitors' products to interface properly with Microsoft's server software.

Microsoft did so, but at a price the Commission said was so exorbitant it amounted to not complying.

The court upheld that finding, but said Microsoft deserved a small break because of a letter the Commission sent in 2005 saying the company didn't have to freely distribute code that wasn't its own and was freely available elsewhere. That letter gave Microsoft some room to think it was okay to continue acting the way it had until 2004, and should have been "taken into account in determining the gravity of the conduct found to be unlawful," the written decision said.

The Commission's top regulator Joaquin Almunia said the judgment "fully vindicates" his office's action against Microsoft and "brought significant benefits to users."

"A range of innovative products that would otherwise not have seen the light of day were introduced on the market," thanks to the Commission, he said.

Microsoft was less enthusiastic.

"Although the General Court slightly reduced the fine, we are disappointed with the Court's ruling," the company said in a statement.

Microsoft was initially fined ?497 along with the 2004 order, then it was penalized another ?280.5 million for noncompliance in 2006, and then another ?899 million in 2008.

The company has already booked provisions for all the fines and penalties and after the ruling it has no active outstanding quarrels with European regulators.

"In 2009 Microsoft entered into a broad understanding with the Commission that resolved its competition law concerns," the company said.

Most notably in the 2009 deal, Microsoft ended an investigation into allegedly abusive practices for bundling its Internet Explorer web browser along with its operating systems. Microsoft agreed to instead offer customers a range of browsers to choose from.

In a sign of the times, Microsoft itself turned to the watchdog in 2012, asking it to investigate Google Inc. for anticompetitive practices. Microsoft alleged that Google was demanding unreasonable fees to license its technologies and asking courts to pull Microsoft products from shelves if they don't pay up. Google shot back with a similar request for the Commission to again investigate Microsoft last month.

Many observers say companies such as Apple Inc., Google and Microsoft are increasingly acting as "patent trolls," using the legal and regulatory systems as tools to thwart competitors as part of their wider struggle for market share.

Almunia said in February "the Commission will continue to keep a close eye on the behavior of all market players in the sector, particularly the increasingly strategic use of patents."

Spice Girls power up for stage musical

By Pete Jeary , NBC News

The iconic songs of Girl Power will be back on stage this Christmas, when "Viva Forever!" takes to the stage at London?s Piccadilly Theater.

This new musical features many of the songs made famous by Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm and Geri Halliwell -- corporately better known as the Spice Girls.

And in a rare show of public unity, the five Spice Girls appeared together, briefly,?on Tuesday to launch the show -- which is produced by Judy Cramer, the lady behind the Abba musical "Mamma Mia!"

Geri Halliwell (the original Ginger Spice) said, ?Years ago we thought -- wouldn?t it be a great idea to turn all this into musical. And all these years later Girl Power is still going strong -- it?s living proof to follow your dreams.?

The musical has been written by British comedian Jennifer Saunders, who has woven Spice Girls songs into a story of talent, fame and the pressures of celebrity on the relationships that really matter.

Emma Bunton (Baby Spice, in her former life) described the transformation from page to stage as an incredible creative process. ?It?s a great story,? Bunton said. ?The words and the music work so well together, it?s very moving.?

"Viva Forever!" profiles the life of Viva, a talented girl and her best friends, who get swept up in today?s obsession with celebrity culture and talent shows.

?It?s a story that clearly refers back to the early days of the Spice Girls,? writer Jennifer Saunders said, ?But it?s as contemporary as the next series of 'The X Factor.'?

As the latest in a series of so-called Jukebox musicals, everyone behind "Viva Forever!" hopes it will introduce a new generation of audiences to the phenomenon that was Girl Power.

American Crystal union workers locked out for nearly 11 months reject contract for third time

Locked-out union employees at American Crystal Sugar Co. rejected the company's contract proposal a third time Saturday.

The union announced that 63 percent of voters opted against the latest offer. It also said that 82 percent of the 1,300 union members that have been out of work for nearly a year took part in the vote.

"We know that give-and-take negotiations are the only way to get this cooperative back on track to productivity and profitability," the union statement said. "That cooperation has produced record profits in recent years, and, only through cooperating, will we be successful again."

A message left with American Crystal vice president Brian Ingulsrud was not immediately returned Saturday evening.

There was no statement immediately posted on the company's website about Saturday's vote.

The labor dispute, the company's first in 30 years, focuses on seniority and job security. Union employees said Crystal was out to break the union, while the company has said it offered a good contract with substantial increases in wages and benefits

American Crystal is the largest sugar beet processor in the country, with plants in North Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa. It's a cooperative owned by beet farmers.

The company has said it will continue to operate with replacement workers.

The company's original offer included a 17 percent wage increase over five years ? which is now closer to 14 percent because the contract had a deadline ? and increased pension, leave and vacation benefits. The union continued to demand wage and pension increases "significantly above" the final offer, company officials have said.

The union's first vote, held before the lockout, turned down the contract with a 96 percent "no" vote. The second vote in November was 90 percent against the deal.

After the last negotiating session on June 8, the union said that its principal objections revolve around health care, drug testing, seniority and qualifications for promotions. The union said the company made it clear in that meeting its not willing to compromise on any issue.

The union's statement Saturday also thanked "relatives, friends, neighbors and union sisters and brothers" for supporting the locked-out workers.

"Your strong support will continue to be needed as we strive to reach a fair resolution," the statement said.

After the June negotiating session, American Crystal said in a statement that the "parties remain far apart."

Fearing a strike in the middle of processing season, the company locked out workers on Aug. 1 and hired replacements. Company officials expect the plants to ramp up production in mid-August this year, earlier than normal because of a large sugar crop.

American Crystal has plants in East Grand Forks, Moorhead, Crookston and Chaska, Minn.; Hillsboro and Drayton, N.D.; and Mason City, Iowa.

Jerry Sandusky guilty

BELLEFONTE, Pa. ? Jerry Sandusky was found guilty Friday night on 45 of 48 counts of child sexual molestation and faces up to 442 years in prison.

A jury of Sandusky's Centre County, Pa., neighbors determined that the former Penn State defensive coordinator sexually abused children over a 15-year period, using his stature as a local coaching hero and his position with the Second Mile charity to target and then violate at-risk kids from the area. The jury deliberated for about 20 hours after a trial that stretched across eight days at Centre County Courthouse. The jury foreman read the counts and said "guilty" on six consecutive counts before saying "not guilty" for the first time. He read all 48 counts.

Jerry Sandusky is taken into custody after a jury found him guilty of child molestation. (Getty Images)Sandusky, wearing a brown blazer, stood motionless with his left hand in his pocket, his eyes on the jury. His wife, Dottie, and three of his adopted sons and one adopted daughter sat to his right. Matt Sandusky, their adopted son who Thursday said Jerry Sandusky had molested him, was not present.

Sandusky, who was escorted out of the courthouse in handcuffs, will be sentenced at a later date by Judge John Cleland. The precise number of years he faces in prison is unclear, but legal experts say it should be enough to lock the 68-year-old away for life.

After the counts were read, Judge John Cleland said, "Mr. Sandusky, you have been found guilty by a jury of your peers."

Victim No. 6 ? one of eight victims to testify ? and his family were in court. He put his head down and wept uncontrollably as the verdict was read. "I'm just overwhelmed," he said afterward.

When court was adjourned and word leaked out to a massive crowd on the steps of the courthouse, cheers rang out and were audible inside the courtroom.

"Jerry was prepared to go to jail tonight," defense attorney Joe Amendola said. "He understood that a verdict coming back on the second day [was an indication he would be found guilty]. With the circumstances of the situation and how the case progressed, it was inevitable."

Judge Cleland said Sandusky would be sentenced in about 90 days. Sandusky gave a quick wave to family and was taken to Centre County jail in handcuffs.

Amendola said Sandusky plans to appeal. He also said Sandusky would have testified on his own behalf had Matt Sandusky not indicated to prosecutors that he'd been abused.

"Jerry always planned to take the stand and tell his story," Amendola said. "Although Jerry and the family deny the abuse [of Matt] happened, it would have been explosive. There was no way for Jerry to testify without the prosecution being able to call Matt."

The case rocked this pristine college area when Sandusky was indicted last November. It led to the firing of iconic head football coach Joe Paterno and school president Graham Spanier. Two other university officials, athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz, are facing criminal charges for failure to report a crime and perjury. Paterno died of lung cancer in January at age 85.

"The Board of Trustees and current administration maintain a steadfast commitment to pursuing the truth regarding Mr. Sandusky?s actions," Penn State said in a statement released following the verdict. "While we cannot change what happened, we can and do accept the responsibility to take action on the societal issue of child sexual abuse ? both in our community and beyond."

The state presented an overwhelming case against Sandusky. It was highlighted by powerful personal testimony from eight victims who detailed, often through sobs and gasps of breath, how Sandusky molested them in Penn State locker rooms, Sandusky's basement and hotel rooms.

[Related: Sandusky, Ohio: Proud city fights off an adverse double meaning]

Sandusky often used his access to Penn State facilities and the football program to lure pre-adolescents into situations where they were alone and the kids were vulnerable.

The state also used testimony from former Penn State assistant coach Mike McQueary, who said he walked in on Sandusky and a boy in the locker room showers in 2001, and hearsay testimony from two Penn State janitors who said a third janitor ? now senile ? saw a similar incident in 2000.

[Related: Most of the seven women, five men on the jury had Penn State ties]

The defense acknowledged from the start it faced a considerable challenge and tried to paint Sandusky as an innocent victim of a grand conspiracy of police and financially motivated victims.

"There are lots of people sitting in jails all across this country who are innocent ? lots of people over the years who have been executed for murder and later determined to be innocent," Amendola said to jeers from the crowd gathered around the courthouse. "What this proves to me is, I believe the jury acted genuinely. I believe the jury acted in good faith. ? I don't have any problem with the jury. We had a good jury."

Stonehenge built as monument to unity

The mysterious structure of Stonehenge may have been built as a symbol of peace and unity, according to a new theory by British researchers.

During the monument's construction around 3000 B.C. to 2500 B.C., Britain's Neolithic people were becoming increasingly unified, said study leader Mike Parker Pearson of the University of Sheffield.

"There was a growing islandwide culture ? the same styles of houses, pottery and other material forms were used from Orkney to the south coast," Parker Pearson said in a statement, referring to the Orkney Islands of northern Scotland. "This was very different to the regionalism of previous centuries."

By definition, Stonehenge would have required cooperation, Parker Pearson added.

"Stonehenge itself was a massive undertaking, requiring the labor of thousands to move stones from as far away as west Wales, shaping them and erecting them. Just the work itself, requiring everything literally to pull together, would have been an act of unification," he said. [ Photos: A Walk Through Stonehenge ]

The new theory, detailed in a new book by Parker Pearson, "Stonehenge: Exploring the Greatest Stone Age Mystery" (Simon & Schuster, 2012), is one of many hypotheses about the mysterious monument. Theories range from completely far-fetched ( space aliens or the wizard Merlin built it!) to far more evidence-based (the monument may have been an astronomical calendar, a burial site or both).

The culture of Stonehenge
Along with fellow researchers on the Stonehenge Riverside Project, Parker Pearson worked to put Stonehenge in context, studying not just the monument but also the culture that created it.

What they found was evidence of a civilization transitioning from regionalism to a more integrated culture. Nevertheless, Britain's Stone Age people were isolated from the rest of Europe and didn't interact with anyone across the English Channel, Parker Pearson said.

"Stonehenge appears to have been the last gasp of this Stone Age culture, which was isolated from Europe and from the new technologies of metal tools and the wheel," Parker Pearson said.

Stonehenge's site may have been chosen because it was already significant to Stone-Age Britons, the researchers suggest. The natural land undulations at the site seem to form a line between the place where the sun rises on the summer solstice and where it sets in midwinter, they found. Neolithic people may have seen this as more than a coincidence, Parker Pearson said.

"This might explain why there are eight monuments in the Stonehenge area with solstitial alignments, a number unmatched anywhere else," he said. "Perhaps they saw this place as the center of the world."?

Theories and mystery
These days, Stonehenge is nothing if not the center of speculation and mystery. The monument has inspired its fair share of myths, including that the wizard Merlin transported the stones from Ireland and that UFOs use the circle as a landing site.

Archaeologists have built some theories on firmer ground. Stonehenge's astronomical alignments suggest that it may have been a place for sun worship, or an ancient calendar. A nearby ancient settlement, Durrington Walls, shows evidence of more pork consumption during the midwinter, suggesting that perhaps ancient people made pilgrimages to Stonehenge for the winter solstice, Parker Pearson and his colleagues have found.

Stonehenge may have also been a burial ground, or a place of healing. Tombs and burials surround the site, and some skeletons found nearby hail from distant lands. For example, archaeologists reported in 2010 that they'd found the skeleton of a teenage boy wearing an amber necklace near Stonehenge. The boy died around 1550 B.C. An analysis of his teeth suggested he came from the Mediterranean. It's possible that ill or wounded people traveled to Stonehenge in search of healing, some archaeologists believe.

Other researchers have focused on the sounds of Stonehenge. The place seems to have "lecture-hall" acoustics, according to research released in May. One archaeologist even suggests that the setup of the stones was inspired by an acoustical effect in which two sounds from different sources seem to cancel each other out.

Miley Cyrus Loves Being a Fiancee!!!

We're very sorry, crazy Miley Cyrus tattoo man. This young star isn't looking for any new suitors.

In fact, as Miley made very clear over Twitter this week, she absolutely loves being a fiancee. How can we be so certain? Consider the following posting: I love being a "fiancée."

She even included a little heart next to the Tweet, and then later sent out a picture of herself, her dog and Liam Hemsworth. It's rather adorable, isn't it?

Miley Cyrus Twitter Picture

The photo is quite the change from an earlier Twit pic, which Cyrus made available on June 11 and which far more cleavage-ful than playful.

A few days later, Miley once again expressed her affection for her men and her pending marital status, writing on the social network: Will I ever quit staring at my finger?, a clear reference to her Neil Lane-designed ring.

Stop Eating Out | Debt Consolidation - Get Debt Consolidation ...

Man and woman eating restaurant mealStop for a minute and think about all those times you just ?had? to eat out. Maybe you ?had? to eat out after the kids? soccer game, after church, or on Friday to celebrate the end of the week.

If you?re a family of four, you?re probably averaging $30 or even more every time you eat out and that?s just for fast food. Think what this really amounts to. If you eat out three times a week and spend $30 per meal, that?s $90 a week or $360 a month. If you were to cut that back to eating out just once a week, you?d be saving $240 a month or $2,880 a year. Just think what you could do with $2,880.

Maybe not as often as you thought

We know how busy and harried your life can be and why you just ?have to? eat out so often. But if you put your mind to it, you may find that you really don?t have to eat out as much as you have been.

I understand that you might not love to cook six nights a week, but you can make things simpler by having a menu. When you grocery shop, you can get everything you need to prepare your meals and have it all at hand when you?re ready to cook. If you can make meal preparation simpler, you should find it easier to do.

Tip: Fix larger portions

Another good idea is to cook larger quantities so that you will have leftovers. We are a family of three but my wife always buys a large whole chicken. She will bake it for one meal and then use the leftovers to make chicken fried rice. When small turkeys are on sale she?ll buy one and will get three or even four meals out of it.

If you just can?t leave home for a dinner, how about having a picnic? You could pack a picnic meal and then eat at a park. This can be a very happy family time and you?d almost feel like you were eating out but at half the cost.

Do you and your partner have a date night? It doesn?t have to be a sit-down meal at a restaurant, complete with wine, at a cost of $50. Instead, you could do a movie night with a $5 Little Caesar?s Hot and Ready Pizza. After all, the important thing isn?t how much money you spend on your date night. It?s spending quality time together.

Treat yourself but only occasionally

Don?t be afraid to treat yourself with a meal out occasionally. However, you can make that meal more affordable by using one of those deals-a-day from a source such as Groupon.com. Even our local newspaper has gotten into the deal-a-day game. Just yesterday it was advertising $40 worth of food at one of our better local restaurants for $20. Since these coupon deals tend to go away fairly quickly, it?s one of those times when you need to strike while the iron?s hot. Just don?t strike too often.

There?s no magic to saving money. It just means living more frugally, which might mean giving up some of those restaurant meals. While this may not feel like fun at first, it will feel a lot more like fun when you see how much money you saved over the course of the year.

Lil Wayne 'Didn't Rush' I Am Not A Human Being II

While his original Human Being album was hurried because of his 'eight-month vacation' in prison, this time he 'didn't rush the music.'
By Rob Markman, with reporting by FLX

Lil Wayne
Photo:

Lil Wayne made history when he released his I Am Not a Human Being LP. The Young Money cash king debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, making him the first artist since Tupac Shakur to notch a top spot while incarcerated. When Weezy drops I Am Not a Human Being II, he won't be locked down on Rikers Island, but he still has his eyes on that #1 spot.

"I Am Not A Human Being II, that's what I'm workin' on right now, actually I'm finished. The difference between [this] album and the last I Am Not a Human Being would be the music wasn't rushed," Wayne told MTV News on June 16 in Atlanta after he finished performing at Hot 107.9's Birthday Bash. "Last time the music was rushed because I had to take that eight-month vacation on that island so we had rushed the music, but this time we didn't rush the music."

The first Human Being LP was released while Wayne was locked away on Rikers Island in New York on a gun charge and yielded the single "Right Above It" with Drake. Tunechi shot a number of music videos in support of the album prior to being locked up, but he wasn't able to fully support it.

Since being released, Weezy has continued to conquer the charts. His 2011 album Tha Carter IV sold nearly a million copies in its debut week and produced a number of hit singles. Now, rather than return to his Carter series, Wayne decided to tackle a Human Being sequel. The album's first single, "My Homies Still," features Big Sean.

There's no release date for Weezy's LP, but when it does come, Wayne promises good music. "I paid attention to everything I did," he said. "You're getting the quality of all my albums: Tha Carter IV, Tha Carter III, the same with this I Am Not A Human Being II. Hope you like it."

What are your expectations for Lil Wayne's I Am Not a Human Being II LP? Tell us in the comments!
