Harrisburg Mayor Vetoes City Council's 2012 Budget
8:58 p.m. EST, January 9, 2012
Harrisburg Mayor Linda Thompson vetoed the 2012 budget, calling it illegal, dysfunctional and politically motivated.
City Council had passed the $54.3 million budget in December.
Mayor Thompson says some of the cuts made by council are unacceptable. In their budget, council eliminated 10 vacant positions including Health Inspector, Senior Accountant and Director of Economic Development. The budget also getting rid of two filled positions from within the mayor's office: Communications Director and Ombudsman.
"This budget is clearly politically motivated, demonstrates the disrespect for the office of the mayor and a callous disregard for the citizens of the city. I will no longer tolerate politics as usual in the administration of city services," said Thompson.
The mayor called the budget illegal because she says it puts mandated public services at risk.
It is now up to council to decide if they will override the mayor's veto. The vote is on Tuesday's agenda.
The final say will go to the state receiver who will provide his plan in early February.
