Recap: Texas-El Paso vs. Houston

Gabriel McCulley posted a game-high 22 points to lead the Texas-El Paso Miners in a 70-50 rout of the Houston Cougars in a Conference USA bout at the Don Haskins Center.

Julian Washburn added 19 points in the win for UTEP (8-8, 1-1 C-USA), while John Bohannon finished with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Joseph Young scored 14 points to lead the way for Houston (9-6, 1-1).

The Cougars shot at a blazing 61.9 percent clip during the opening period of play, but went into the break trailing the Miners, who shot 56.0 percent from the floor, 33-31.

UTEP stifled the Cougars during the second half, allowing Houston to hit a meager 27.6 percent from the field while hitting 66.7 percent of its own attempts to earn a decisive 20-point win.

The Miners dominated down-low, besting Houston in the paint by a 34-20 margin during the contest.
