Asteron Life?recently completed the second in its ?Better Business? series of adviser presentations, focusing on the theme of ?Small Business, Big Marketing?.
At the invitation-only events, advisers were provided with insights from one of Australia?s?top small business?marketers and coaches, Tim Reid (Small Business, Big Marketing).? Mr Reid addressed his adviser audiences in terms of their operating a small business, rather than specifically operating a financial advice practice.? He shared his philosophy?that marketing is the quickest way to a sale, using this approach to talk to advisers about how they can incorporate?new?technology and communication options into their?marketing strategies.

He also advocated the importance for any small business operator of getting their message right first, before they determine where they should position that message.? ?Message first.? Medium second? was Mr Reid?s mantra, which led to?his recommending that advisers?(small business owners) should identify?the 3 ? 5 key messages of their business, and ensure that everyone who worked in their business also understands what those messages were, so that they are all ?singing from the same songbook?.
Business touch points were also highlighted by Mr Reid, who emphasised the large number of touch points that exist for most businesses, including websites, email signatures, recorded voice messages, business cards, letterheads, Twitter accounts, office signs, images, logos, etc?? Mr Reid stressed the importance of ensuring that there should be a consistency across all of the touch points of the business, citing Apple as an excellent example of consistency of message across its global networks.
Mr Reid covered the characteristics of high performing websites, emphasising the importance of being clear about the services the business delivers, the quality of its content, the ease of allowing the reader to contact the business?and ensuring the information on the website is current and regularly updated, preferably with unique content.? Removing fear was another characteristic of top performing websites?highlighted by Mr Reid, particularly as it relates to advice businesses.
Other key issues, such as?how to succeed in local area marketing, how to optimise the value of Google searches and best leverage social media opportunities completed a wide-ranging presentation by Mr Reid, whose message to advisers was that there has never been a better time to market a small business. Ever.
