During the fall and spring, Charger Recreation sponsors intramural and club sports along with outdoor recreation.
There are many ways for students to meet new people and have fun while doing it. Charger Recreation helps to provide that, even for students that have never played a sport before.
?A lot of times intramural and club sports and varsity are kind of confused,? Mike Logan, director of the group, said. ?Intramurals is on the very casual end. If you?ve never played before, that?s great. You can have fun for a few weeks and then you?re done? Club sports are for fun, short-term commitment.?
Fall consists of flag football, softball, tennis, and ultimate Frisbee. Dodge ball, basketball, racquetball and court volleyball will start late in the fall and continue into February. Soccer and sandpit volleyball start in April.
Teams are registered through imleagues.com, an easy to use website that will help everyone sign up for sports and put together a team. Friends can get together and join, or individual students can either request to join a team or a team can ask others to join via the site. The registration information the site asks for also helps provide Charger Recreation with emergency contacts and other valuable safety information.
Club sports are a little more serious than intramurals, but only in that they hold practices and travel off-campus for events. The most established club sport at UAH is rowing, but other offerings include bowling, disc golf, outdoor adventure, lacrosse and table tennis.
If sports are not your thing, but you still like participating in outdoor activities with others, Charger Recreation also plans an outdoor recreation trip. There will be a trip in October and will consist of a camping trip to Deer Run in Spring Hill, Tenn. where paintball will be offered but only to the first 20 registered.
Charger Recreation also offers jobs for experienced referees and umpires, or just for those who enjoy administrative activities to help with events. Applications will be taken until the middle of October, and training will begin in the spring.
