Latest developments in the global Occupy protests (AP)
Some of the latest developments in the Occupy protests taking place in cities across the world:
NEW YORK
Ninety-two-year-old folk music legend Pete Seeger marched with throngs of people in New York City's tony Upper West Side in support of the Occupy Wall Street protests.
Seeger, accompanied by musician-grandson Tao Rodriguez Seeger, composer David Amram, and bluesman Guy Davis, shouted out a verse as the crowd of about 1,000 people sang and chanted.
They marched peacefully over more than 30 blocks from Symphony Space, where the Seegers and other musicians performed, to Columbus Circle. Police watched from the sidelines.
At the circle, Seeger and friends walked to the chant of "We are the 99 percent" and "We are unstoppable, another world is possible." Seeger stopped to bang a metal statue of an elephant with his cane ? to cheers from the crowd.
At the center of the circle, Seeger and Amram were joined by `60s folk singer Arlo Guthrie in a round of "We Shall Overcome," a protest anthem made popular by Seeger.
BRITAIN
St. Paul's Cathedral has closed to the public because of Occupy London Stock Exchange protesters camped outside, church officials said Friday. The Dean of St. Paul's, the Rev. Graeme Knowles, said the decision to shut the doors of the iconic London church to visitors and tourists following the afternoon service was made with "heavy hearts." He said health, safety and fire concerns ? notably the presence of flammable liquids and stoves set up by protesters ? were at the heart of the issue because the church has an obligation to keep visitors safe.
CALIFORNIA
Hundreds of protesters defiantly remained at their campsite outside Oakland's City Hall early Saturday, despite a city order to vacate.
As the 10 p.m. time of the city's ultimatum passed Friday night, Occupy Oakland demonstrators showed no signs of departing as music blasted from the plaza. More protesters arrived with tents as midnight approached.
Earlier, city spokeswoman Karen Boyd said that Oakland gave official notice that the protesters do not have permission to remain overnight and that their encampment is breaking the law. There was no indication of significant police presence early Saturday.
Boyd says that protesters can legally demonstrate at the plaza from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
NEW MEXICO
Albuquerque police subdued a 48-year-old man who lunged with a knife at a group of protesters gathered near the University of New Mexico.
Police Sgt. Patrick Ficke says about 100 people were in the area when Miguel Aguirre pulled out a knife and attempted to stab several protesters.
Ficke says no one was injured.
NEW YORK
An "Occupy Albany" encampment was set up Friday at a park across the street from the granite walls of the state Capitol.
About 75 protesters, many college age but ranging from high school students to retirees, gathered in the afternoon in Lafayette Park, across the street from the statehouse. "Corporate rule or people," one protest sign said.
Later, about 200 gathered around a park statue for a "general assembly" to reach consensus on a statement in support of the national movement and to oppose corporate domination and the economic collapse caused by Wall Street and complicit officials in Albany and Washington, D.C. They planned to gather again Saturday afternoon and several said the movement would extend Saturday to the city of Saratoga Springs, 30 miles north.
