Clinton opposes GOP UN bill, raises veto threat (AP)
WASHINGTON ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says she would recommend that President Barack Obama veto a Republican bill to cut funds for the United Nations.
In a letter to lawmakers, Clinton said Wednesday that the bill would undermine national security by making it difficult for the United States to work with other countries in countering nuclear proliferation and combatting terrorism.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee is scheduled to consider the legislation on Thursday. The bill would force the United Nations to adopt a voluntary funding system and block U.S. funds to any U.N. entity that elevates the status of the Palestinians.
Clinton acknowledged the criticism of the U.N. but said it is indispensable to advancing U.S. goals.
The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter.
