Campervan Hire ? History and Culture | Second Hand Cars
A campervan hire agency is a company that specializes in hiring campervans to customers. It is interesting to note that not all campervans are owned by the company that hires them. There are also privately owned units, obviously with some profit- and responsibility-sharing with the campervan hire company. Campervan hire is a category of vacation rental popular in the United Kingdom and is also gaining increased popularity in other countries.
Freedom and carefree living are a signature of campervans as most of its users are the young people, couples and groups of friends, especially when geared towards attending music festivals and other similar events. They are generally smaller and are trendy, stylish with cheery features as compared to its more formal counterpart, the motorhome. These rather larger recreational vehicles, as they are commonly called in the United States, are usually rented out by specialized motorhome hire agencies to families and are therefore more heavily-equipped and spacious. As a result, campervans are easier to drive and suitable for most driving licenses. And where campervans have trendiness and style, motorhomes offer reliability and practicality. On the matter of rental rates, it is generally cheaper to rent a campervan due mainly to its compact size and is therefore favoured by the common user. Even insurance with campervan management companies, being comparatively cheaper, contributes to an overall lower total hire cost. As a casual observation, it is interesting to note that some motor hire agencies interchangeably use the terms ?campervans? and ?motorhomes? unnecessarily confusing greenhorn customers.
Now we have a relatively clear idea of what and how to hire the appropriate vehicle for our travel and leisure requirement. Now, let?s take a look of how it all started.
Car hire started with Daimler Hire Limited, a service which started in as early as 1897 providing a luxury chauffeur-driven Daimler Limousine-hire-service from Knightsbridge in London, England. It later it included self-drive hire cars and aviation services.
Though expensive, Daimler flourished as a business, later adding a dozen or so radio-equipped cars to the service in March 1923. And during the coronation of King George VI in 1937, Daimler Hire provided 150 Straight-Eights for use by foreign dignitaries in one continuous procession.
The campervan image may have originated from the Volkswagen Type 2 which was officially known as the ?Transporter? or ?Kombi? (short for Kombinationskraftwagen), a panel van introduced in 1950 by German auto maker, Volkswagen, as its second car model. It caught instant popularity mainly because of its unique look and its passenger-cargo combination utility. And like its predecessor, the VW Beetle, it earned itself several nicknames worldwide, including microbus, minibus and hippie van, being the vehicle of preference during the counterculture movement of the 1960s.
